No team was allowed to talk to Monk.

Cap space ain’t what it used to be. You have to be willing to make trades, which means giving value to acquire value. Welt just lets assets expire in the name of flexibility.

Right, but you know that’s not how it actually works either.

It feels like every guard trade scenario posted on here was met with “Just sign Monk”

Humbling reminder that free agency is a two way street.. a player has to want to sign with you for that plan to work

I’m going to say Weltman is a careful spender…it had to have been clear to Monk’s camp that there was no blank check here for him. I don’t mind it for either to come to fair market value and turn around…as long as this isn’t it for us. Bigger fish out there.

looks like Monk just might not have taken meetings with other teams and wanted to stay

If the scuttlebutt about Klay over on hoopshype is to be believed, Orl doesn't want to offer anyone a long deal. Maybe that thinking played into the Monk situation also, coupled with the fact that Monk is a doubt both as a starter and defender.

DLo might also be off the table? JJ Redick wants the ball less in LBJs hands, apparently. I don't see how the Lakers are going to do any better than DLo in terms of having an initiator to take over more reps....

I don't know that anyone (maybe DET?) is going to offer Klay more than 2 years - unless the third is a team option or the annual salary is significantly lower. I can get behind the idea of Klay at $30m (with some work & rationalizing), but third year guaranteed, given our rookie extensions, etc...is a no-go for me. I'd immediately shift my attention elsewhere if guaranteed 3rd year is a condition.

Anyone know how descending deals ("Weltman specials") are calculated? How heavy can they be weighted and is there a strict formula? IF we can swing it AND still address PG, it's always better to front-load a deal, to the greatest degree possible...especially with our roster/salary situation.

Orlando not wanting to offer anyone a long deal is another reason why Anfernee Simons makes a lot of sense. He has two years left on his contract right now. That gives us 2 seasons to let him prove it and earn it.

Trust me, we spoke to his agent and told him how much we were willing to offer him

If he resigned with Sacramento, it s because the $ difference wasn't big enough to make him leave home

FA off to a rousing start. Wanted Monk and I really thought it was going to happen.

KT does not move the needle significantly, esp considering the money and contract length he wants.

I’ve had this feeling that they’re not going to do anything of significance for a while. And although it’s way too early to conclude I was correct, it’s bothersome that they couldn’t beat that offer for Monk.

We’ll see.

I am a little worried about our front office and free agency. I don't recall any good moves they've made in free agency.

I really thought Monk was a great fit and the most likely signing. Timeline, skills, money all matched up. But it is what it is. Melton would be an improvement on Harris and while his 3p% is good, the overall fg% really doesn't make me excited. We'll see what happens.

Melton does nothing to me, that's just Gary Harris clone. Low usage, undersized, limited, bad playoff performer.

He is good to be like 9th guy on contender

Likelihood of running it back with 1 year deals to keep cap flexibility for next year has increased.
