Offers for Jimmy Butler

Post#1 » by dcstanley » Fri Jun 21, 2024 4:22 pm

Q: Who will be the biggest star to change teams this summer?

A (Beck):

Jimmy Butler will be traded. Rival executives have been buzzing about it for months, for all the obvious reasons.

Butler is about to turn 35 (with a lot of hard miles and a lot of injuries), with one year left on his Heat contract, and is reportedly seeking a two-year, $113 million extension. If the Heat grant it, they’ll have little to no flexibility to add another star. And they absolutely need one.

Credit Butler for powering Miami to two Finals in five seasons. But a team built around Butler and Bam Adebayo isn’t enough to challenge the Celtics, Bucks, or Sixers in the East.

Pat Riley is known for moving off his high-priced players before they fall off a cliff. And Butler at this stage would be much more valuable as a second or third option on a contender than as the top dog in Miami. This feels like the right time for a pivot.

The Ringer's Howard Beck believes a Butler trade is on the menu this offseason. What exactly does that look like? What teams should be vying for his services?

I'd take Philly over the field

Possible trades for Jimmy Butler

Heat/Rockets
3rd pick + Cam Whitmore + Fred VanVleet to the Heat

Jimmy Butler + Terry Rozier and the 15th pick to the Rockets

Heat/76ers
The Clippers 2028 pick + the 76ers 2029/2031 1st round pick along with cap space to the Heat

Jimmy Butler To the 76ers

Heat/Clippers/Thunder(only works if Paul George opts into his contract, which is looking more likely based on recent news)

Cason Wallace + Kenrich Williams + 12th pick in this year's draft, Heat 2025 1st round pick + 76ers 2025 1st round pick(top 6 protected)+ Nuggets 20271 st round pick(top 5 protected) to the Heat.

Paul George to the Thunder

Jimmy Butler to the Clippers

Kings/Heat

13th pick in this years draft+ Kings 2028 1st round pick + Keegan Murray + Kevin Huerter to the Heat

Jimmy Butler to the Kings

Others teams such as the Warriors have the assets to get Butler, it's going quite complicated due to the new CBA rules

This feels like a potential aging star merry-go-round. Butler would be a nice recovery for LAC is George is set on leaving. I think Miami would want to get younger/cheaper/more flexible, so George would likely go elsewhere. Maybe KAT can get thrown in for good measure.

He would need to go to a contender, a contender good enough to reach the playoffs while Jimmy coasts during the regular season. There aren't a lot of teams that fit that criteria who also have assets to trade and a need for a forward. OKC, Philly, NY, maybe. New Orleans and Orlando might be interesting except they're already loaded at forward.

76ers would be the front runners, but I could see Dallas making a real bid.

I think you could get one of Lavine and Vuc, PG, Harden (s&t) and maybe if you add Durrant (although less likely)

Nah he’s not worth these types of packages anymore.

Keegan isn’t getting traded for a 36 year old

Unless the Mavericks are willing to give up Derek Lively, in which even then, his fit next to Bam Adeabyo would be awful due neither of them being good 3pt shooters, I don't see the Mavericks having the assets to get Jimmy Butler. Even at his age, he's still worth around 3 1st round picks and maybe a bit more with the right team.

I liked the GS idea. Though I could see Philly making a move as well.

I don't know how the Warriors could do it, but man that would be pretty cool

Yeah, GS, the Lakers, or Philly all work, but I'm still skeptical he gets the extension he wants.

Ingram, Nance or Dyson (for salary). Possibly a Milwaukee pick for Butler

I'd love him on the Kings. He would solve our issues of being soft overnight.

Miami pick of Barnes, huerter, Sasha, duarte, mitchell, lyles. Then #13, a future 1st.

Still probably gets beat

Lakers maybe. They'll pay him. Picks + filler.

He's not worth 3 1st rounders anymore when you factor he probably only has 2 seasons or so left of being able to play 3/4 of games... He's a guy you need in the playoffs and it's quite unlikely he can be relied upon to be healthy enough for a full playoff run.

I don't see either team wanting this one. I would think the Rocket would prefer to keep FVV to go alongside Jimmy but I don't see them having a particular interest in Jimmy due to his age.

Heat/76ers
The Clippers 2028 pick + the 76ers 2029/2031 1st round pick along with cap space to the Heat

Jimmy Butler To the 76ers

Yeah, this is probably more in line, but Miami will need a tangible asset this year. I don't see them saying to their fanbase, "Hey, we traded Jimmy for nothing!"

Yeah, I'm down for this! Of course, it's an overpay but none of those picks is particularly premium, so maybe it's justified?

Kings/Heat

13th pick in this years draft+ Kings 2028 1st round pick + Keegan Murray + Kevin Huerter to the Heat

Jimmy Butler to the Kings

I don't see Murray being included. Like, no way at all.

Others teams such as the Warriors have the assets to get Butler, it's going quite complicated due to the new CBA rules

Yeah, but they'll find ways to make offers. I think the point is, like with Dame last year, someone will talk themselves into Jimmy and his extension and pay for him. They may very well end up the better for it...
