I like how we keep hearing the words "more versatile". Pretty sure that relates to defense, as Pat played a surprisingly versatile role on offense this year.

You used to be able to put Pat on the top of a drop scheme because he was so fast in recovery and good at rear contests, and you could play him at 4 and dare guys to post him up because he'd stone anybody. I know people hate his kamikaze closeouts, but there was a time when he could get a second jump and contest after a pump fake/relocation.

None of that stuff works anymore. The closeouts take him out of the play completely. Bigs can get the corner on him in the post now, and he doesn't have the same recovery speed he used to chasing over ball screens.

I think itll be fairly easy to trade Pat, he’s a sold role player. If nothing else, get a cheaper salaried player and maybe a second rounder or two.

As Frank said on a somewhat recent episode of LOB, I don't see any way Pat doesn't have negative value right now.

It’s ok because twitter guy says we are shopping him for someone better that makes the exact same salary

Need to find someone on his rookie deal still that hasn’t panned out yet that can fit on the roster and will benefit from a change of scenery. A trade like that is the only thing that makes sense that only involves Pat C. Who’s that player?

Just looking at spotrac salary rankings, here are the 15 guys right after Pat for discussion, so they all make between 9.3 down to 8M
TJ McConnel
Amen Thompson
Jalen Suggs
GP3
Tre Jones
Zeke Nnaji
Keegan Murray
George Niang
Ausar Thompson
Josh Giddey
Josh Green
Jock Landale
Looney
Moritz Wagner
Trey Lyles

Not sure if there is a 1 for 1 fit there where we get some cap relief or a small asset, but curious if any of those names make sense

Quentin Grimes or Corey Kispert might fit the bill.

If we can't find anything we like with Pat, I'd offer him for Cody Martin. Martin makes only $1.1 million less, but his 2nd year is non guaranteed. Martin was headed to being a nice player before a meniscus injury, maybe he gets healthy and gets back on track. At his best, he could defend.

My 1st hope is that some young team wants a good veteran presence, and flips us a 2nd.

I was thinking Grimes too. I really like Noah Clowney but I doubt BKN parts with him for Pat C. No real value there from Pat but Clowney would be a good dude to keep an eye on especially if BKN pays Claxton.

Like, no, I don't believe that putting a bunch of Bruce Browns and Matisse Thybulles around Dame/Giannis means the offense will still be "fine". Our only young guys (Green, AJJ, Marjon) don't have that kind of potential so who are you then going out and filling the offense/play-making/shooting void that trading Khris leaves?

The '21 Milwaukee Bucks.

This is where the Jrue slander officially goes overboard.

JayMKE wrote:Its nonsense to say Giannis has 2 years until he falls off when he hasn’t suffered any serious injury and put up his most efficient season on offense, the issue is & remains that half the team around Giannis is ~2 years from retirement on their last legs. The window can be extended but it means not doubling down on this core and making some ballsy decisions. Defense ffs!

He had his most efficient season because he took the most shots at the rim since the first Bud season and he was assisted on those shots the most since his first two seasons in the league. Everywhere else he was below average.

I don't think he falls off in two years but over the next couple of seasons we're going to need to start thinking differently about what kind of team we're going to have around him.

How did that go for DJJ in the Finals? Anyway, this isn't the only important component of defending.

Yes, Jrue blew it versus Jimmy Butler last year... but he's a phenomenal defender. Not overrated. Look at the way the Bucks defense fell apart after the trade.

*Yeah, they also had the incompetence to run Beasley next to Lillard all season... While expecting a solid defense.

He doesn’t really fit our main needs, but I am admittedly kinda intrigued by Cole Anthony. Feel like Orlando is giving up too much here though.

Big Ayo stan here, and think he can be a big sixth-man type player especially on a team with the gravity we have. I don't know as much about Cole Anthony...but big doubt ORL is feeling this, outside of pulling the wool over Hammond's eyes.
