I'm sure everything's on the table, but all things being equal, they might prefer picking at 31 than 23 for that reason: that a second round pick signed to a minimum contract is the smallest salary allocation possible for a roster spot.

That's true. And they may prefer trading Beauchamp for the highest 2nd they can get, so that's a considerably cheaper salary slot for next yr. But at a point they need to guard against having so many green (no pun intended) players on their roster.

One way or another, I think this could shake out to where we end up w/ no 1st this yr, 2 high 2nds, & maybe a lotto protected 1st next yr so we have time to maneuver under the 2nd apron before making that selection.

From David Aldridge piece. I wonder if the first quote is from the bucks. Terrance Shannon Jr:

Eastern Conference executive No 2: He’s a damn good defender. Shooting is a little sporadic, but it’s gotten better. You talk about tough, now. He’s tough as s—. If he goes to a certain team, I could see him starting next year. He could start for us, probably.

Western Conference executive No. 1: Initially, a nice rotational piece every night in the regular season. He’s going to get buckets. There’s going to be some nights where you scratch your head and say ‘Did he just shoot that?’ And then there’s going to be other nights when he goes for 25, 28, and you’re like, wow. He’s a man. He should be able to step in next year, because he can compete athletically, he can compete physically. And, when he wants to defend, he can. Offensively, he can go get it. I truly believe he will be, at this time next year, in the conversation for First Team All-Rookie. At worst, second team. In most cases, he will be drafted by a pretty good team. I think he’s going to be late teens at best, 20s and worst. And those are playoff teams. They have guys that know how to play. Their roles are already defined.

Is it going to take a while? Yes. But he knows the landscape of what’s in front of him. He is not a consistent defender. His role at Illinois the past two years has been, it’s fallen on his shoulders to do so much scoring, and creating offensively. But when he wanted to lock in, he can get into guys. He can get into people. Is he a Herb Jones? No. Herb is an every possession guy. Terrence, there’s going to be some times when there’s some mental lapses. But then usually, he’s going to make it up for you and will get it back with a steal three or four possessions later.

Maybe Shannon could be a great defender at the NBA level, but I never got the impression watching him for 5-years in college that he had that kind of potential. I'm always wary of thinking a guy's defense is gonna translate simply with increased effort. His instincts are meh.

I'm trying to think what scenarios in which the Bucks could keep their 1st this yr, cuz I want them to.

And one thought process is just that they trade Bobby before the start of free agency, for a cheaper guy like GP2, & maybe a lotto protected future 1st. Then view Daron Holmes as the seamless, less expensive replacement at 23.

This gets them under the apron, or closer to it, w/ corresponding moves like trading Beauchamp for a high 2nd + smaller salary, & Connaughton + a 2nd for some salary relief (guy who's an end of rotation player, maybe backup pg).

They have to be considering a lot of avenues, but in a vacuum the 1st rounder is constraining as is, because of the cap hold, & it's significantly more than a minimum contract for next season.

I think by virtue of this draft being pretty devoid of high end upside its more likely than not that they keep the pick.

That’s how I feel about Salaun. I kinda understand just swinging for the fences in a relatively weak class like this but it doesn’t really seem like he does anything well on a basketball court right now.

I think Salaun and Sarr’s respective athleticism is worth the gamble in this poor draft. I definitely agree Salaun very well might just be another Bruno Caboclo lol. I just can’t get the Justin Jackson/Kelly Oubre image out of my head when I see Risacher.

2024 NBA Draft Thread - June 26/27

Post#1313 » by machu46 » Mon Jun 24, 2024 11:13 pm

Givony saying he constantly filmed Stephon Castle in warm ups this year and it took him 30-40 minutes to make two jumpers in a row is one of the weirdest pre-draft lies I've ever seen. I’m relatively low on Castle but that is just completely unbelievable.

2 days is pretty absurd. Cut down on the junk filler and mostly awful interviews, no need for two days.

Wild guess there will just be more of the same crap just stretched into the broadcast time rather than integrating actual analysis.

I won't post my top 30 and wreck the board aggregate, but I wouldn't have Sarr or Sheppard in my top 10, and Holmes would be. Sarr is more raw than Wiseman, that's how far away he is.

I've already done that. Makes it more interesting. We can all go look at consensus big boards.

I think Russilo has been talking about Sarr and Wiseman a lot lately too, saying with Wiseman, there were times he’d just play without thinking and it was great but too often he got in his own head and it made him play stiff and there’s a lot of similarity in that way with Sarr. The good moments where he gets the rebound and goes coast to coast and stuff looks incredible but then there’s a lot of moments where he just looks lost.

This kind of thing relies on lots of informed people giving their honest appraisal. The only thing that wrecks it is low participation.

What is the Thon/Giannis level rocks or diamonds swing pick? I reckon we go with that.
