You can crunch all the numbers you want but you can't crunch emotional intelligence.

One step at a time, Walt.
Need to avoid the too much, too soon scenario. That extension is hefty. Just need the Raptors to ensure that he has the proper support going forward and they don't leave him stranded.

I was just paraphrasing Darko.

He made the all star game and was the ROTY. Even if he tore his ACL he probably gets this contact. Replace his name with any other young player who has that resume going into year 4. There's no reason to wait.

Locking Barnes down for the future was our top priority, he is the superstar potential glue-guy our team needs, and we're going to build around the competive advantage he provides to this team.

Signed with team T.W.O for the 2022-23 2023-24 2024-25 season.

Not offering it now is high risk, low reward.
Ben got better as a player defensively but showed no improvement as a player offensively.
It's lazy reasoning.

Because you don't play chicken with your star player on the 1% off-chance he implodes.

If he doesn't like Gary Trent didn't, then that doesn't make him an overpayment and we're stuck for the next 5 or more years as he'd become untradable. I understand the human part of the game and needing to keep him happy but even if we waited a 2 months to see how the off season plays out, wouldn't that have been more beneficial for both parties?
With all due respect, I don't think you have a good grasp of the long term importance of interpersonal relationships.

You don't wait on a talent like Scottie Barnes, you get that contract signed and don't look back. It was GO time, the moment the finals ended.

Actually its not. He objectively deserves this contract after averaging 20/8/6 with almost 3 stocks a game while being an extremely versatile and highly effective player on both ends of the court. Winning ROY and being an All-Star doesn't hurt either. Some of yall really are telling on yourselves right now. He is a max player in the open market today which is why he was extended as fast as humanly possible.

I am irrationally high on Scottie and defend him at every turn, so not sure what you're going on about.

Simply that him deserving this contract is subjective. It's not.

The only serious risk I can think of is if he suffers a terrible injury that ruins his career trajectory. But signing him now shows full commitment, so I'm cool with it.

We still have his rights even if he's a free agent next off season don't we? I don't see the point in extending him now. If he suddenly becomes Ben Simmons lite and loses the ability to pay, Scottie just got a max and we're screwed for at least the next 5 years.
Maybe Rudy Gay is the better comparison? I also like to see if he reaches all-star status without Siakam next year, but waiting until half the season is too late.

Re: Why Are We Extending Scottie Now And Not Later In The Season?
The extensions off rookie scale contracts are typically very solid value. You're getting a players prime years for the most part, so even if they underachieve, it's not the end of the world.
In this case, the Raps really had to choice, unless they wanted a pissed off Scottie. Scottie has been one of the best, if not the best player from his draft class, so if he doesn't deserve it, nobody really does.
The max is also coming for Cade, Mobley, Wagner, Sengun.
