We’re considering Naji Marshall in FA as a role player; let’s check his college stats:
24 AST%, 2 STL%, 17ppg, +.3 FTr, +.3 3fgr. Was the star of his team. Gotta always draft the prospects with star traits, not the college role players.
Wait, hold up. Why did the Pelicans view Naji Marshall as expendable?
Because of two college role players that were not stars are ahead of him in the pecking order.
Herbert Jones has a collegiate career 7.3 ppg and was 4th on his college team in scoring during his final year.
Trey Murphy has a collegiate career 11 ppg and was 3rd on his college team in scoring during his final year.
Yea but that's only taking scoring into consideration. Herb was by far the most efficient, best on defense, a 6'8 distributor. I also don't take career statistics into consideration at all unless it's to prove positively they are able to do something (ie Terrence Shannon was a defensive stopper prior to Illinois). His shooting was an insane turnaround. Completely unexpected.
Trey Murphy is a bit of an anomaly but him being on UVA should be taken into consideration. Bennett suppresses stats big time. Seems like gambling is a no-no on defense. Also name the last 20ppg scorer at UVA. It's more about team basketball. That said, he wasn't much of a passer, didn't draw fouls... There are enough indicators that he could become a role player (unreal shooter), but he wasn't my first choice back then.
But yea, the formula doesn't always work perfectly and there are outliers for sure.
