These bets shouldn't count from that long ago with all the bs that happened the past 5 years

The 2015-16 Celtics, coming off a 48-win year, who just drafted Smart + Jaylen Brown and had more Nets picks incoming, would not win a title in EIGHT years.

I mean, it is pretty on-brand for his takes he throws around here so I am not surprised

To be fair, I actually think that was a good bet to make given the fact they hadn’t drafted Tatum and we had no reason to think Brown would be as good as he is. Given how hard it is to win a championship, that’s a great bet to make. I wouldn’t have made it but if I had to choose I’d bet the field over Boston.

Fair enough... but if i am betting against a team it would not be the 48 win team with incoming top 5 picks for years.

It was an even worse take because the bet was made after Tatum was drafted and after the Kyrie to Boston trade. In all fairness though, I thought the path to a championship at that time was to trade JB and Tatum for Anthony Davis, so the core would have been Kyrie/Hayward/AD/Horford. Things looked really bad for me after June, 2019 after Kyrie bounced and AD forced his way to the Lakers.

But yeah, giving an 8 year window was definitely not a smart move on his end.

The funniest part about the whole thing is I was actually trying to bet another guy in that thread $50 that the Warriors would destroy the Cavs if they met in the Finals that year, and for whatever reason, this dude decided to “save” him, stepped in and offered up this bet.

Oh yeah I did not realize you already had Tatum and Kyrie at that time to.

Sheeeesh
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

That changes things. However, how often do these things work out? Very rarely do teams land guys like Brown and Tatum in back to back years. Back in 2017, it was no sure thing that either of those guys would become the players they are today. Look at all the tanking teams the past few years. None of them have drafted a championship caliber core. Like would you bet on a team like Orlando winning in the next 8 years? The Rockets? The Cavs? The Kings? The Pistons?

If Orlando had more projected top picks coming in, and just made a deal to get a mid 20s superstar guard (say like Mitchell), would you be betting against them?

Danny Ainge was still the GM at the time, and he had executed a similar gameplan back in 2007 where he had cashed in assets for KG. I didn’t think JB and Tatum were going to wind up as good as they are, but I did know that those would be enticing assets once AD hit the trade market.

Brad Stevens was also still coaching, and if you look at that 2016-17 roster, he basically led a team with a lineup of Isaiah Thomas/Avery Bradley/Jae Crowder/Amir Johnson/Al Horford and Smart/Olynyk off the bench to the 1st seed in the East. Going into that coming season, the Celtics had just acquired Hayward via free agency and Kyrie via trade. So if Brad could lead a team of IT/Al and role players to 53 wins, imagine what he could do later on with a squad that had 3 All Stars on it (Kyrie/Hayward/AD) plus Horford. Again, this was all before Hayward broke his leg and Kyrie went crazy. Lol.

Plan didn’t work out like I thought, but it’s all moot because a) Celtics still won a title, and (b) this little fella won’t honor his bet anyways.

What a **** idiotic thing to say in the first place

You’re the same guy that thought a core of Siakam and Fred was something to build around. But I’m the one with crazy takes. lol
