May as well use this thread to run a quick sample, because I agree that if it does not look like any top results will change, then there would be little point to redoing the entire project.

For my part, I would vote against 1973 Kareem (Frazier?), 1982 Moses (Magic?), 1985 Bird (Magic), and 1988 Jordan (Magic). Split on how I feel about 1957 Pettit (Russell), 1964/66 Wilt (Russell), 1970 West (Reed or Kareem), 1989 Jordan (Magic), and 2008 Garnett (Kobe).

In general I have always felt Magic only having one win was absurd for a player with three MVPs and Finals MVPs and who demonstrably outperformed at least two other winners in the most important series of the season.

With AEnigma in that Magic would look a lot better on my personal ballot than he did in actual voting ('82/'85/'88/'89 he would likely be my top choice).

There's a couple of votes from the last decade where I've differed from the actual winner, but wouldn't expect much change there.
I bought a boat.

Just a thought here.

How about do the new RPOY votes and then pool these results with the old ones? That way we recreate a RPOY project with a much larger sample of voters since most of the guys active today didn't vote 15 years ago.

Like the idea in principle but then that further removes the possibility of there being any real change.

I think people should definitely be asking whether, say, one changed result is worth months of effort — and if not, how many changed results would need to occur (or at least be expected) for it to be worthwhile.

Not saying the lower rankings do not matter… but it is a tough sell to invest months of commitment so we can change a couple of runner-ups and a few #3-5 guys.

I suppose that is where the OPoY/DPoY come into play though. Also mixed feelings about the split in focus where everyone knows their RPoY votes would essentially count for less, but in another vein, combining them all keeps overall interest high when OPoY and DPoY are much duller awards year to year (spoiler: Oscar/West and Magic/Bird will comprise the top two in OPoY voting for something like seven consecutive years, and Bill Russell is going to end up with ten DPoYs minimum).

The debate and revisiting the threads is the fun part, more so then the results at the end. At least for me so I don't mind participating even if the overall picture doesn't change much.

Alright. Will give it a few days to see if any moderator / experienced project runner is motivated to take this on. If not, will open up a pre-project thread on either June 30th or July 1st, with an anticipated start of July 7th or 8th (after the Americans finish their extended holiday weekend).

You would have to do it in reverse from last time. Start in the 50s and then go forward, otherwise people will dropout once you get to older eras. And do like 5 years at a time, because it takes too long otherwise

Why would we let voters not in the project decide he voting of the project?

Insulating the status quo defeats the purpose of a retro. Voters can read the old retro reasoning and come to their own conclusion. Anything more is silly

Then the sample of voters increasing with voters who won't debate anything shouldn't mean anything to you...

Thank you for being willing to take on the responsibility! This should be exciting.
