The team has the 8th overall pick in the draft and is trying to build around the best prospect the league has ever seen…how does it make sense to completely punt on using that resource until 2030/2031? Was really rooting for the Spurs to land some valuable rotation pieces tonight but this is just downright foolish.

(Really like Castle though)

I think it is the 8th pick. Dillingham's going to Minnesota, I believe.

WHAT?? OMG PLEASE BE TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!

We got TWO firsts for him, one of them unprotected

HOLY CRAP!!!! This is almost as good as the feeling of Ray Allen hitting the shot and us winning the title the next year. WHEW!!!!!!!

I wouldnt have cared if we got an empty paper bag for the pick if it was Dillingham. "San Antonio Forfeits the 8th pick" would have been better than him

This is AWESOME!!!!! I was about to be pissed all night.

I have a feeling we either didn't get our guy at 8 so we traded out of it - did very well stockpiling picks - or we got our guy at 4 and that was that.

One thing's for sure - NOBODY saw this move coming. Stealth. Love it.

But it's not necessarily punting till then, though. It's assets NOW. Including an unprotected one. We turned an expiring Poeltl into a lotto pick and now into two 1sts, including an *unprotected* one. Point being, the assets got better in terms of protections and number. We can use both *now* or at any point in the near future whether to flip for a now player or at next year's draft to snag a guy we really love.

This is good asset management. Dilly is a heater scorer but has holes in his game that we want to shore up, not keep repeating.

We're not done yet. More moves are coming.

I'm thinking they thought they got their guy with Castle and didn't like any of the wings that were left. (I think they might have taken Salaun if he was there) Plus they might have some FA or trade plans we dont know of.

2030 is a ways off but its Minnesota. Odds are they are going to suck

Another 6'5"/6'6" wing -- but definitely luv the Castle pick

Should be an elite defender, multi-all-nba defender and round into a reliable three point shooter, playmaker and ballhandler.

Will look for others a bit more than his own shot -- but know when to score.

I like his mentality as well it seems. Should be a good compliment to Vassell, Wemby, and Sochan.

I imagine if Salaun was there at 8 he would of been had.

Like the move to trade Dillingham pick and get more assets for probable trades.

1ST ROUND:

4th Pick: Stephon Castle

8th Pick: Dilly selected for Minny. We traded him for 2030 (top 1 protected) pick swap and 2031 unprotected 1st.

We also save $8M which increases our cap space this season as well as gets us assets to use for future trades.

I was puzzled by this trade, but with cap space in mind, it makes some sense. I'm not following the Spurs cap space situation, but if they save some space for a key free agent signing, and it wasn't just 8 million this year for the #8 pick, but 3 years guaranteed with increases every year. Then it starts to make sense.

The 2030 & 2031 picks are unknowns at this point, but with the lack of protection, could be valuable in a few years. It's an interesting trade.
