Also got a chuckle out of Sam V saying that he believes in Tyler Smith’s shot more than he believes in Holmes

Anyway back to our lack of UDFA moves and whoever the hell our two way guys are…wtf. Once AGAIN with a BIG GAPING HOLE at back up Center we just let every undrafted big go elsewhere
This is probably the main reason for reservations on the AJ Johnson pick. And while I liked the Tyler Smith selection, pretty sure it was Vecenie who also had the comment along the lines of "he's a prospect who might not hit until his 2nd team" and I thought that was incredibly fitting given what happened to our only quality pick under Horst (Donte). It's hard for me to have any faith in this team's scouting department until they prove otherwise.

I'm jealous of what the Timberwolves were able to do. Getting two legit prospects to add to their core who likely play some sort of role during the season... must be nice.

I like that they grabbed a PG that can learn behind Conley but Dillingham kind of feels like they didn’t learn anything from the D’Angelo Russell experience

I applaud minny’s aggressiveness, but an unprotected 1st and a swap is quite a bit for a guy who hasn’t proven anything in the league.
At that price, he better be a high level starter for you, because that’s what that pick package likes nets you in the open market.
They trusted their analysis, and made the move.

I just don't get it. It's like we expected him to find a ton of rotational pieces with **** picks.
Re-posting but....
I'm not a fan of Horst at all, but this is an absolutely horrible take. Its not that Horst is a bad drafter, he just never had the picks. (i personally hated the Jrue trade where we gave up all our picks for a borderline all-star that overall underperformed for us in the playoffs). Looking at his draft history, outside of DJ Wilson (I am not confident he made that pick), it has been ok.
DDV-They gave up on him because he had a devastating injury that hobbled him when it came for them to crap or get off the pot on an extension. He wanted a long-term 8-figure deal which wasn't reasonable at the time as neither Sacramento or GSW offered it to him. If DDV didn't get injured against Miami, we probably give him that extension and it would've been looked at as a great pick.
Merrill - They traded him in a package for a way better starting SG we had for two years. In that time, Merrill had a couple barely hanging on years with Memphis/Clevland before finally having a break out year at 28 years old by being a 18 mpg player. Bucks absolutely made the right call first drafting Merrill and then trading for Allen.
2023 NBA 2 33 Andrew Jackson Probably better than most 2nd rounders
2023 NBA AJ Green Hit
2023 NBA 2 58 Chris Livingston Seems like a decent pick for the spot
2022 NBA 1 24 MarJon Beauchamp Probably a bad pick, but only 2 guys (Nikola, Nemhard) would have made a difference/clearly better
2021 NBA 2 54 Sandro - Not a bad pick
2021 NBA 2 60 Some Greek Guy - Bad pick but most GMs arent even watching the draft at that point
2020 NBA 2 45 Jordan Nwora Pretty Good pick for the spot
2020 NBA 2 60 Sam Merrill Great pick
2018 NBA 1 17 Donte DiVincenzo Good pick
2017 NBA 1 17 D.J. Wilson Bad pick, was on job for 10 days and seemed like he didn't actually make the pick

Not a bad drafter but a bad combo of drafting and development. We keep taking these Giannis level swings in the draft without a good developmental staff to back it up. Detroit went out and hired Fred Vinson one of the best shot doctors in the nba as an assistant. Livingston only played 5 games with the Herd last year and really nothing nba worthy has come out of the Herd yet so obviously we are keeping guys in milwaukee for development. AJ Green was already a great shooter before he got here and already breaking his nose several times in college hustling on defense so what has he improved on since getting here? Beauchamp obviously needed playing time to learn the game when he got here. He needed to fix his shot and add handles and get stronger. Maybe he just doesn’t have the drive to get it done but it seems like we have just bounced him around not really knowing what to do with him. He has shown some improvement in the post and gotten a little stronger but not really any sort of leap. What player have we drafted since Giannis that has made any sort of nba leap that AJ Johnson and Tyler Smith need to make it? Why would you continue to invest the draft capitol in young guys when the organization seems to have no developmental plan for them?

Lots of good stuff in that post, but this was the question that needs to be asked to Horst. This team has shown and absurdly low commitment to youth and developing draft picks (or even worse we care but are just this bad at it), so what the hell are we going to do differently? If the answer is nothing, then trade them, but then they are responsible for why we look like a bunch of dinosaurs out there playing a young man’s game.

I was just thinking about Giannis calling Coach Sweeney at 2am on a sunday saying I can’t sleep lets go to the gym and work on this part of my game or something like that. Sweeney wasn’t married, no kids, no life, and he was like lets do it. Not sure we have a young, hungry coach like that on the staff for these young guys

Not sure it's fair to make a determination on what kind of development plan is in place for this team considering the new coaches in the building this summer.

But some level is on the organization, not just Doc. Like I doubt Doc has much input on the Herd yet we elevated Tyty to a regular contract after a season with the Herd. It will be interesting to see how much playing time he earns on the Bucks in camp.

I mean this is somewhat of a 2 headed criticism where you have to play devils advocate. We all know the % is insanely low on draft picks developing into even above average starters in the 1st place and when you’re never picking at a premium pick, it’s even lower. Horst made a long term decision when he started the pick trading extravaganza trading for Eric Bledsoe years and years ago now. When you’re constantly picking in the 30-50 range every draft and an occasionally in the 20s and twice in the late teens in the past 7 seasons, what type of earth shattering talent are you likely to discover? Bledsoe, Jrue, Dame, Crowder and Tucker cost us last years 1st…. That’s like 13 draft picks he’s traded for 4 players.
It’s hard to criticize his draft philosophy when he did more with the draft to build a championship team than he did developing rookies.
RIP Kobe Forever. GOAT 8-24. Long Live Giannis

there's really no way we can evaluate most of these guys with any certainty yet. DDV and DJ, yes. And the greek guy who was DOA. Everyone else is still very much up in the air.

For some reason I thought we had elevated him and when I saw you list two guys on two way contracts I thought it confirmed it but I forgot there are 3 two way spots. Sorry

My point is way more around what are we doing to develop them once they are here. I understand we are drafting late every year if at all.
