The AthleticDyson Daniels | 6-6 | SG | G League Ignite
We’re getting into a type here in the late lottery: Guys with poor left-tail outcomes because of their shooting, but enough on the right tail to make them worth pursuing regardless. Daniels isn’t a freak athlete, shot 52.5 percent from the line and 27.3 percent from 3 in the G League and needs an hour and a half to uncork his outside shot.
I’m a big fan anyway. Few players I saw this year were more obviously about the right things than Daniels; even as his teammates with Elite did whatever the hell it was they were doing, he was very consciously trying to play the right way, hit the open man and compete on defense. He guarded every opponent’s best player and was good at it, with size, competitiveness and anticipation for steals. He has a point guard’s handle and is a plus passer. While he isn’t an above-the-rim athlete, he’s able to finish in transition and draw fouls in the lane.
An Australian who is the same age as this year’s one-and-dones, Daniels came away with a statistical projection from his G League season that should be pretty positive: He averaged nearly two assists for every turnover, shot 54.9 percent inside the arc, had an 11.0 percent rebound rate from the guard spot and had high rates of steals and blocks. Some scouts I talked to compare him to Memphis’ Kyle Anderson in terms of an iffy shooter who can impact the game despite not being an elite athlete, but Daniels has more high-end outcomes than that because there is still time for his shot to come around.

We traded AJ pick #16 in the 2022 draft for Dyson pick #8 in the 2022 draft. Traded offense for defense.

Stop looking on the bright side, jaybird.

There has to be a silver lining somewhere, even if just a sliver

Re: Prospect Spotlight 2022: Dyson Daniels
Dyson's motor, defensive gifts, and effective rim finishing made him a rotational player in New Orleans, despite a severe lack of shooting ability. He will join the Hawks and immediately establish himself as the best defender on the roster, and the best perimeter defender in the Trae Young era. He has proven he can be impactful without shooting it well, but if he can develop a league average jumper, the Hawks will have found themselves one of the most valuable starters in the NBA.
Dyson grades out as an impactful defender by every all-in-one metric:
+1.5 D-EPM (88th%)
+1.4 D-LEBRON (91st%)
+2.6 D-BPM 2.0 (96th%)
Dyson's weakness by far is his outside shooting. There's no sugarcoating it, Dyson was often treated as a complete offensive liability by opposing teams.
There were times centers would be matched on him, sagging off 15+ feet to provide help around the rim. Players aggressively stunted at ballhandlers and tagged rollers when matched up against Dyson, as he commands zero respect as a shooter. He shot just 29.1% from three and 30.5% on C&S 3s. He was better from the corner, shooting 37.4% on 96 attempts.

We need his game to be more than just defense. I have high hopes for him as I did before he was drafted. Team Dyson!

I posted this on the general board but thought you might like to read it.
Daniels 30% shooting was closer to 20% at the start of the season & his end of season shooting raised it to 30..

Re: Prospect Spotlight 2022: Dyson Daniels
Green obligated to play CJ neglected Daniels development. The 10 games Daniels started in CJ's absence the starters were +20 in 100 minutes. CJ's return from injury is the only reason Daniels went back into obscurity & IMO shouldn't have but veteran, max, politics.
His low 12% usage, was +12 starting with ZIon's volume efficiency. Same with Hawks wanting Young closer to 35% usage than 30. Deniel's is going to alter your defense, while allowing Young to strive offensively.
CJ, Herb, Murphy, Hawkins, Jose ... it was a crowded backcourt & Green was to busy catering to making CJ work. By end of year I'd bet teams will feel a lot different about Daniels & this trade.
