Sad news. She was great in A Woman Under the Influence (so tough to sit through that film).

The Bear S3 wasn't as strong as the 2nd season but still really, really good. Might need a re-watch to truly appreciate it. Not something you watch in one sitting lol. Everyone seemed to love the season premiere. Episode 6 was a gem, directed by the Ayo girl. Liked episodes 2 & 3 too.

I still need to watch 8, 9 and 10 tonight, but yeah Season 3 is more on par with 1 than 2. Really good but not blow-you-away-special. Episode 6 is excellent as you said. Ayo is super talented.

RGMFAM, please can some of you help me out? I need some suggestions, I want to be a fan of rap, can you guys give me a few songs that will help me get into it?

I want to make a playlist just to get a taste of it, I don’t want to be overwhelmed so I’m not starting with the lists that are already curated.

I’m looking for about 10-15 songs that you think no rap fan should miss. I know there are different types of rap, I’m not looking for one sound (well, I want to understand the words  ), so give me a mix of everything.

It can be old or new, it doesn’t matter if it was a hit song, just give me a few of what you think is a best and must, if you would like to help.

Thank you!

Thanks for helping me. I already like this song, it’s very popular. I do know some songs already, I’m thinking the ones I know must be popular for me to come across them if I know them on my own… my brothers did listen to things back in the day but I wasn’t trying to hear it, of course from catchiness, I know some of those.

Edit: I don’t listen to a lot of new things anymore but the new stuff I do like, from newer artists, likely comes from something I heard in TikTok. Videos on TikTok put songs in your head like they are earwigs.

Just a few I love. They're all pretty immediate in terms of the hooks:

-Warren G - Regulate
-California Love - 2Pac
-Can I Kick It? - Tribe Called Quest
-Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z
-Hey Ma - Cam'ron
-The Message - Grandmaster Flash

Would also recommend digging into Public Enemy's Fear of a Black Planet record. The sheer sound of their early records is remarkable.

Method Man - Bring the Pain (still in my hype up mix, plays in my head if I got to get ready for conflict lol)

Biggie - Hypnotize

Biggie - Mo Money Mo Problems

2Pac - Changes

And just for the lol's (would admittedly be a little surprised if you didn't know this existed)
Shaq - What's Up Doc
Baylor is Brat.

I know most of those but haven’t heard them in a while, going to add them!! I do love any Pac though.

To be clear, I know some songs, especially popular songs. So, I would love for you guys to keep recommending everything you love, even if I know them, I’m sure there will be a lot I don’t know.

I know public enemy but I don’t know the album, likely find out I know a song or two. I’ll be listening to it soon!

Thank you!

Adding! Thanks!!

Funny enough, as I think you know I was/am a Shaq fan, I have bought his CDs but never listened to them much. I have some CDs somewhere in here but I thinkI lost Shaqs. I’m going to get into his songs again, he must be okay for the recommendation (i know that song), he sold A lot of records! I might find out I like him as a rapper.

Edit: this is off topic and I’m sure you don’t care but for those that do…

Damn did method man mature into a sexy man! He wasn’t ugly or anything, but age and maturity can make a man blossom! Some people take to aging well.

EVERYTHING. This is why I have no idea why I never got into rap. I know some of the catchy/popular songs, but I’m not a fan, I couldn’t have a convo. I love music! I listen to any and everything from OLD OLD music, different languages, so many different genres but rap escaped my love. Growing up, I OWNED the TV, my siblings hated me! All day if one of my shows/Shaq wasn’t on, I was on all music channels from CMT, BET, MTV, to VH1! Radio, tapes, and CDs on when I couldn’t get music videos.

Just trying to see if I missed out. I don’t know what I was doing.

If you’re looking for something to kind of blend you from another genre and into rap you can’t go wrong with The Score from the Fugees and also Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Lots of 80’s and 90’s rap sampled some of the old old soul, R&B, and funk classics (and lesser known songs from those genres too. De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Boogie Down Productions (and KRS-One then as a solo artist) are probably my 3 favorite from that era. The Roots are amazing at this too but more in live instruments and musical blending instead of as many samples. Black Star as well and Mos Def is my fav out of that duo.

Newer style… I don’t really care for most of it. He’s not new anymore but “newer” I do like Anderson .paak a lot and Malibu is a classic album. I like Ventura a lot too and no complaints about Oxnard either.

One even more obscure recommendation for me is K’naan (dusty foot philosopher probably my fav album of his and the live version too) and K-os (Atlantis is my fav album of his.

Didn’t really list too much stuff I figured you probably already heard lol but if you just want general hip hop recommendations then Jay-z, Biggie, J Cole, old Kanye, and Kendrick Lamar are musts without going too far back in time.

Saving this to reference! Thanks.

Kanye’s first few are works of art in my opinion, but I can’t listen to him anymore. When I know something about people, it’s hard to listen to their stuff, knowing that it will be supporting them. I know he has mental health issues, but he doesn’t need more money he needs more help. Dang Kanye!
