It's the rookie max, just like Barnes who are the franchise players for these teams. What did people expect these guys to get?

Just because you can pay these guys rookie max contracts doesn't mean you should. It's almost as if these teams don't negotiate and just give these contracts by default. A rookie max is still 45m per year, in this case for a player that's never made an All-Star team.

Well if you don’t then the player will just take the qualifying offer and leave in free agency next season. You have to overpay for future growth.

This is standard. Best players even on bad teams, especially in this case with Barnes and Cade, guys that have put up good numbers with high draft pedigree are going to get paid max, there is no in between. Even Patrick Williams got $90m. This is the new NBA, anybody decent to good is going to get crazy money. If Cade keeps progressing, $45m/yr might not even look bad considering that stars get $50m+ nowadays and also keeping mind that this is an extension so it won't kick in until 2 years from now when the cap is even higher and Cade is more established.

the reality is that if they don't and the player says he's not going to sign an extension and become an unrestricted free agent in another year, then what?

Call the player's buff. When push comes to shove top prospects aren't taking playing out a year on the QO. Too much risk.

this isn't a game of poker with your buddies. there's relationships, agents, etc all involved.

I made my peace with this happening a while back.

It’s a leap of faith. He’s not had a season where he was worth anything approaching that.

It was this or trade him and start over again.

Oh that’s so adorable that you think the bulk of the money comes from fan attendance. Did you read that in the newspaper while listening to your phonograph by any chance?

You can just offer that player a rookie max the first day of F.A. the next summer and they'll take it. Worst case, the player signs an offer sheet with another team and you match. But no player or agent is going to run the risk of injury and play on the Q.O. when they have $200M sitting on the table.
