David Locke (Utah Jazz announcer) has said that if Memphis had drafted Williams Utah was likely going to pick Edey, so we must be the other team he had a great workout with.

I think he probably showed a lot more lateral ability and more acceleration and agility than initially thought. Not sure what else would’ve surprised teams. The guy was unstoppable in college

I think there were a lot more teams high on Edey than people think. I'm sure he was miami's target as well. Memphis just needs a super wing now.

After winning at +1100 to go top 10, I put most of that back on a bet for ROTY, +1000. If he starts, he might win it due to lack of competition.

Difference is hansborough was a tweener w/ t rex arms while Edey is gigantic even at the center position w/ good mobility and soft touch.

Edey is slow as molasses on D though. It is a a different game these days and he will be expected to stay in front of guards on the perimeter.

I don't know who would be more insufferable
The Edey fanboys if he's good
Or Big J if he's bad
Actually, the worst outcome is he's just okay, like a bench player or fringe starter, cause then both would be claiming victory at once. So I just hope he goes one way or the other.

I wish him the best.
However, it is an objective fact that MEM took a significant gamble by taking him 9th (I personally would not have taken him until pick 20). His player profile/player archetype is not an ideal fit for the modern NBA, and he will be expected to produce like a top ten pick. If he doesn't perform up to expectations, and if players drafted after him outplay him, it's not gonna be a good look for MEM (additionally the team is investing a substantial amount of $ in him).

Re: Zach Edey, 7-4
I barely followed this draft. But like the day before I was thinking, I bet we end up with Edey, he's a big mfer.
I'm completely fine with the pick tbh. We needed size and he'll never need to do anything more than set screens, stand near the basket, and rebound. A big who could maybe give 10-20 minutes a night in a draft like this would be a win in my book.

Come on man, we know that we live in a world where both camps will fight to the death on it. Edey is clearly going to prove both sides right. He’s going to have some monster statlines, he just is, there will be nights where a team’s backup center is out and he just feasts, like 15 and 10 in 20 minutes.
If I’m reading Jenkins correctly I’m pretty sure they’ll juice his rotations so that his per minute efficiency is really good. Lot of bench lineups or ones with Bane/Kennard doing PnR to give him extra space.
But the critics will also probably see him get exposed badly against certain teams and he won’t play that much. It’ll be the perfect storm of argument fodder.

Zach Edey will never average 15/10 in the league. In 20 minutes lmao.

Ok good that you can get on record stating that Edey will get 15/10 once in a blue moon against bench players.

15/10 over 24 minutes seems reasonable
23 and 15 per 36. Could actually see more points per 36.

Taylor Jenkins is an elite coach. I trust him to get a lot out of Edey. Zach couldn't have asked for a better team to play for when you look at their roster composition. He just has to be elite finishing around the rim. If he is, he will have a long productive career. All the other stuff about defense, defending in space is irrelevant. Just be great at your one thing and keep spamming it. I would hate to have to defend Ja and Bane off high ball screens he sets. I even wonder about big to big passing between him and Jaren. Should be fun to watch.
