Stanley Umude is the type of signing I've been looking for Horst to make. Take fliers on some younger diamonds in the rough and see if you can turn them into something. It's better than going back to the 30+ year old vet pool and trying to make their corpse move.

If it is an NBA deal I hope there is a team option or some length to the deal and not just a 1 year minimum. I'd hate to develop him and then he just walks for a bigger deal next offseason

Seems like Umude was starting to find playing time for the Pistons and then got hurt for the rest of the season. Great signing.

I hope this is a 2 way but it'd be really funny if he's our starting 2 and he's also totally passable in that role, just like our previous five SGs (Brog, Wes, Donte, Grayson, Beas) over the last 6 seasons.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's just a SL agreement.

It doesn’t seem like anyone really knows how it works. Frank Madden says the way the CBA is written seems to indicate we can combine salaries as long as the trade brings us under the second apron.

My understanding is if a team aggregate salaries in a trade they are hard capped at the 2nd apron for the season.

Yes. This is a situation where it would be nice to be under the second apron and give a guy like this a partial tpmle over three years. If he blows up, we got bird rights. Maybe we are working towards getting under the apron and wont announce details until we do

What’s the deal with this new kid? He actually looks like he has a role on a NBA roster. I can honestly and somewhat surprisingly say I’ve never even heard of him..

Genuinely assumed it was fake because I've never heard that name either.

what kind of defender is Umude?

Not sure, but bball index has him classified as a helper and hes rated a little above average

Defense is what put him on the map, and then he developed his shooting

That's fair but it's worth pointing out he's an Arkansas writer & Umude played for Arkansas so seems fairly plausible

Umude, all turnovers and blocks from 23-24

https://thehighlow.io/video/player/nba/2023-24/1630649/stl,blk?ordsq=asc&shotFilters=

Im seeing quick hands. Im seeing a knack for stripping the ball as the offensive player is going up w it. Im seeing a sg beating the ball off the backboard.

We already drafted 6'5 Maxey. Did we just sign 6'6 Derrick White?

Yeah, but given they're not an NBA writer and the timing (beginning of FA, just before SL), it also seems plausible that it could be any kind of agreement: SL, 2-way, camp deal / ex. 10, NBA contract. An actual multi-year NBA contract seems like the least likely option given this guy was just pushed out the door by a 14 win team.

Two nba champion teams gave up on ddv and let him walk for nothing. Detroit is certainly not above making a terrible personnel decision

He has great rotational instincts on defense. He seems like a pretty solid calculated risk taker when he goes for steals/deflections and reacts quickly to the ball rotation when he gets himself out of position. I know it’s a super small sample size but hey, if someone like this can play 12 positive possessions per game, that’s the stuff that usually leads to helping your team win games even in small dosages.

I’m wondering what the issue is with him? A Derrick White prospect for any team is a huge boon, wouldn’t Detroit want to keep that?

That is correct, but the question is if we have to get under the 2nd apron before we can aggregate or if we can do both in one move.

Given the state of their franchise, there isn't much belief one should have in what Detroit does to actually improve.
