Very good get and hopefully they can add another piece on the cheap. He’s an integral part of the up and down offense. Improving his defense and rebounding contributions will make this team better. I feel he’s stepped up his offense and the only way he can be better offensively is more usage/priority which he is capable of.

Think of it this way. Doug McDermott was being paid and on their books for $13,750,000 this past season. Obi takes his salary slot at a slightly higher $15 mil per year.

Jalen Smith’s 5 mil salary is now off the books. So they can sign another player for 3.75 mil. So hopefully they can find a vet similar to Eric Gordon willing to take less or scoop up another teams cap casualty that fits when free agency gets farther along.

I would have liked it if they could have come in at 12.5-13 mil per season but they probably gave him the 15 mil per to avoid another team driving his price higher and putting us in a worse situation.

It's not the worst contract I've ever seen so they get him locked in for the full 4 years starting at $13.4 and going to $16.6 million in 2027-28,
I still see a need for a 2 or 3rd string center considering foul issues that Jackson still has. Is there a guy out there who could be gotten for league minimum or about?

I read that the Pacers let TJ’s contract fully guarantee for this season from 5 mil to 9.3 mil which is a warranted move and great for him. So I wonder if they will

1. come to a handshake/verbal agreement to extend him after the season to not go into the tax this year ?

OR

2. If it’s possible to work out an extension this season without increasing the salary cap for this season ?
Would the extension include this season’s numbers or be only based on the next few years and not affect this season’s numbers ?

I know diddly squat about legal moves but I think TJ will show loyalty to the Pacers since they’ve kept him paid, settled, relevant still for a 5 years now here.

Of course Carlisle can’t pull the move of leaving him out of the rotation again or I wouldn’t blame TJ for wanting out.

(there are some ways it could, but not really relevant to TJ's contract at the moment.) This year counts in the number of years included in the extension,... so a 4 year extension would be 2024-25 + 3, but they money they would include would be tacked on. He would start receiving the money from the extension in 25-26?

TJ's extension can be signed in about a week and as others have posted the money won't change for this year.

Yup. Most extensions are just that, an extension. They add additional years on to the end of the current deal. Very rarely, though we saw it with Myles Turner, a contract can be renegotiated in conjunction with an extension, but that requires a team to have cap space. Any potential McConnell extension would not affect our salary cap for this year.

Fair question. To me, it’s that Obi has a clear path to success: scoring in multiple ways. Jalen is often useful, but has too many bouts where he either gets in his head or just can’t be consistent. Even then, he’s kind of a bit of a Jack of all trades and not really excelling at any one thing. The balky back problems that Jalen has battled for multiple years hurts here, too.

If Jalen had had a successful playoffs and Obi had the playoff run that Jalen did, maybe we’d see the salaries swapped? But, alas, they did their things.

I'm guessing,... other than Stix priorities the last time he signed,... but I think he might have left some money on the table to get at least a 3 year deal,... someplace that he can see a path to real playing time. Maybe not a lot of money,.. but some. Most of the analysts that rate a FA 'value' in terms of money had Stix from 8-12M.

(The same analysts has Ob1 from 12-15M. So, 13.5 first year is right in the middle.)

The Bulls have needed a 4 (and frankly a backup 5) for years. The last 2 years they haven't had a real big that could even begin to play on the wing. They have used Patrick Williams,.. who is actually no bigger (standing reach) than Jarace, Nesmith, or Mathurin.

The Bulls are also 20th in 3%, 26th in 3 point attempts, with most of their shooting coming from the corners or the top of the arc. Stix can shoot the 3, primarily from above the break up to the shoulder. (from opening day until Christmas last year he was 70% from 3 - Tony Easts' last podcast)

The Bulls also (because of Vooch) play a lot of drop with minimal switching of bigs onto wings. Again,.. right up Stix alley.

The fit is beyond good. I believe, that once again,.. Stix is betting on himself, finding a place that he can actually play & matter. I, for one, am really hoping he succeeds. He deserves it.

I think we’re gonna see Obi’s contract come in a little lower than this with unearned incentives on there that could bring it to 4/$60m if maxed out.
