Whoa! I wasn't expecting that!

I think the weight of not repeating was heavy on Wyc most of the last 16 years, and it is understandable that he, at least, would want to go out on a high.

But kudos to him. He's the one who tried to nudge the team in 2023 and then pushed Brad to make the (brilliantly executed) changes needed for 2024. He had always said that when they had a competitive team the would spend--and that's just what he did.

I only dealt with him once in the business world, but he was a personable, standup guy throughout that.

Ya his is, for sure, not good news. There are a very limited number of people who could both pay the 5 billion it would cost to buy the team AND pay the record setting salary+tax the team will require to stay together starting in 25-26. Like we'd all better hope some random billionaire with a love for Celtics basketball is out there somewhere. more likely the C's end up getting owned by some hedge fund bro who just wants to maximize profit or by some saudi oil conglomerate.

Can't even blame Wyc, its brilliant business. Win a title maximizing the value of your asset, sign everybody to extensions to maximize your odds of going out on top, then sell off right before it gets crazy expensive. Makes the buyer eitehr foot the bill or be the bad guy.

Its possible they eve already have a buyer lined up. Apparently Wyc plans on selling a majority stake then staying in charge until a deal is finalized in 2028, but i don't see how he could know that unless a deal is already line up. Like, that's not typically the way these sales work so that feels like something that has to be approved by the buyer and wyc.

Just read to the 2028 part of your post now: I guess that sort of gets him off the hook on indebting the team to big contracts and then dumping that on someone else.
