I've got to imagine the asking price is waaaaay too high even if a dozen of them put money together.

It does say "the controlling family" so that could just mean Wyc since he's majority, i.e. controlling group.

Wyc and his dad (who I think is still alive?) could well have wanted to reduce their overall asset weighting in a sports team. If they have the majority share, I guess they can impose such a sale on all their partners in order to maximize the appeal of the team for their new Mr. Deep Pockets. Minority owners who still wanted in could presumably work out a new deal with the purchaser(s).

There are a few reasons the timing makes sense. First, the Celtics are coming off an NBA championship and are set up to compete for a ring in the next handful of years, led by Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. On a purely business side, the league and teams are about to get an influx of money from a new national television rights deal — which will more than double the money coming into the league from that source — followed by expansion, which will lead to massive expansion payments (the expected buy-in price could be close to $4 billion for each team) divided among the 30 existing NBA team owners.

Well this sucks really bad. I hope we get multiple rings out of this because we're probably in for some dark times once the current era of the team comes to a close.

If I'm JT, I'm not signing any supermax contract that doesn't also include trade provisions. You don't know where this is going. The team could be stripped bare in a few years. Tatum could end up as a star without a supporting cast or could be shipped off to wherever. He has to protect himself. This supermax doesn't even start until 2025-26. A player option for the fifth year isn't nearly enough protection.
