Stoudamire also had elite hands, which made him a great pick-and-roll finisher. Sarr is kind of the opposite. He is longer and even more athletic than Stoudamire, but he lacks his hands.

I maintain that a taller Jonathan Isaac is a good comp. Or if his offense comes around a little bit and he accepts that he should play center, then the Jaren Jackson Jr. or Evan Mobley comparisons are possible.

lol at Amare Stoudemire. He’s nowhere close. Amare was a bully as a 19 year old. Sarr was getting pushed around by euros 6 inches shorter than him.

Sarr is a tough evaluation for me. His best chance of success in this league is a 5 that has some forward skills. But instead he wants to be forward 4. These days there is no distinction for me between the 3 and 4. There's just guards, forwards and centers. You can make a lead guard/offensive initiator distinction but I'm not going to get that far into the weeds.

Ultimately, Sarr's insistence on playing the 4 will have massive ramifications for the Wizards. With Sarr's lack of shooting ability, you need a stretch 5 to maintain floor spacing. I.e. Giannis and Brook Lopez. In addition, you have to evaluate Sarr's skill level for the position that he plays. Take KD. KD is just a great shooter. He's not a great shooter, for a big. This is the challenge that Sarr will run into. No one in their right mind will respect Sarr's jumper. Either his set shot or his pull-up. In addition, his ball handling is very limited.

So what you're basically looking at is a massive need for skill improvement. Even if you want to say that due to his physical ability, he doesn't need to have as much skill as other wings, there is still a need for basic skill. If Sarr works on his game and improves, the payoffs will be enormous. If Sarr improves somewhat, adds some muscle and gives up this notion of being a 4 then the Wizards will be in a pretty solid place.

Imo, when evaluating his growth, I think it makes more sense to look at him as a wing. And evaluate him as such. How his ball handling, how his 3-point shooting. How his playmaking etc. From a Wiz management perspective, there are probably saying regardless of what happens to this experiment putting Sarr at the 4 the Wiz win.

I don't know if he realizes that playing the 4 puts more pressure on him. Yes, the competition will be a bit easier to defend at that position given his size advantage, but there's pressure to perform offensively because while Jonas and a number of centers can hit the three, they tend to be low volume and shots that the opposing defensive can live with.

Having two poor shooters at the 4 and 5 basically puts you back to mid 2010's basketball. It's acceptable for a year or two but eventually the microscope will be on Sarr's offensive improvement if he wants to stay at the 4.

I groan audibly when I consider how good of a switching defensive we could have with Sarr + Deni at the 4 and 5 respectively.

Hand in hand, with the above post, is one simple question. How will the Wizards use Alex Sarr. I really have no clue to be honest with you. Will we see him in the high post? In the low post? I guess we'll see him in the PnR. Will we see him standing around the 3-point line at all? Are we going to run a 90s/2000s 4/5 attack?

If you watch some of Sarr's tape you can see some KG to his game. But these days we want players to space to the 3-point line. And KG made a living off the mid-range. All of this to say that, it'll be very interesting watching not just the development of Sarr but the utilization of Sarr. If the kid is locked in and works hard, it's easy to envision developing into a max player.

And his defensive will be all NBA worthy. If not for Wemby being in the league, I think you could probably pencil him in for some DPOY.

I’m not concerned about whether Sarr plays C or PF at this point. What position he’s best at will likely not be known until 2-3 years from now and much of it will be determined by his size (bulk) and skillset at that point.

What would be really nice is if he could play some of both positions in the future, which is really what I’m expecting.

Tony Massenburg describes Sarr here as a “stretch 4”…

https://youtu.be/22scpIkVnQI

So it looks like this FO sees Sarr as a 4 for the time being, hence the signing of Valanciunas to pair with him. Our half court offense may be a bit crowded…unless Sarr starts hitting 3s at a good clip…

So. I think eventually when we get this kid on the "protein powder" weights and steaks diet then he can play center when he fills out. But for now 4 is where it's at and getting mobile centers who are strong is where it's at so we can switch them in and out. Sar can probably do center on O but he's gonna get bullied down low for a bit.

Starr and Chet are good comps, Chet is also a 7ft twig who plays the 4, later they can switch between 4/5 after they build weight/muscle.
