Will Gary Trent Jr. be a Toronto Raptor after free agency?

Post#1 » by CazOnReal » Sat Jun 29, 2024 11:54 pm

As the title asks. After the recent salary dump that led to the Raptors acquiring Sasha and Davion, in conjunction with the team picking up Bruce Brown's option, the Toronto Raptors are set to operate as a "below tax, over the cap" team contrary to the presumed cap space they were expected to have.

As things currently stand, this presents a problem for them if they want to retain SG Gary Trent Jr.; though they possess his Bird Rights, the team will not have full access to the MLE nor will they have enough cap space to retain Trent at what is his presumed value on his next contract (Those pointing to Malik Monk's re-signing should understand that it's viewed as Monk having taken a paycut to stay in SacTown rather than his market value).

Will Gary Trent Jr. be here next season? Or is he gone?

Ideally it's Bruce Brown trade + GTJ S&T and we can finally move on from this mid era

No, we can’t sign GTJ after we pick up brown options , unless we trade him

There is reports that teams don't view him as a MLE target anymore. It's obvious he isn't a great three point shooter unless he's wide open. I don't see him getting anything over 10M a year. I don't rank him better than PWill, no way he gets a better contract.

Hopefully not.

I'd rather give Gradey and Walter larger roles.

Weird, he’s not that bad of a player and somebody’s about to get him really cheap.

I wonder if he'd come to Detroit for their room exception (2 years $16.3 million) with a chance to battle Ivey, Holland, and Hardaway JR to start next to Cade.

Seemingly word around the league is that he's not even worth the MLE.

Oubre signed for what? $4M one year only last year at this time. Now signed 2 years for $16M total with same team. Why pay above market value prices for players like Trent. Teams have the leverage and should wield it appropriately.

While retaining an asset is an argument often presented here, it can quickly turn into a liability. The demand for Trent in trade market last 2 deadlines was weak as it gets.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

Is it now. Then why hasn't he signed for less than or part of the MLE? The reality is he's probably holding out for more than the MLE.

And that doesn't mean he gets it.

Glut of players with his skillset. He was simply way overpaid beforehand, especially if you look at what other shooting guards made versus their production.

I was thinking he wouldn’t be back but I’m starting to think he might be on a short term deal.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Come on now man this is just a bad take.
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

Lonnie Walker last year signed fir just over 2 million and is unsigned.

No need to overpay....wait out the market.

I think Orlando could come in with something.

Return to Toronto Raptors
