Even after that, they still could have signed and traded him and had some assets/salaries to make moves with. Instead they just decided they’d rather cheap out and rebuild the year they’re opening their brand new arena.

Why would Philly do a sign and trade, they had the cap space. Why give up assets when they can sign him outright without giving up anything? PG had a player option, the only way he opts in is if he wanted to go to a team that did not have cap room to sign him.
