The Hartenstein deal feels like the old Morey signing of Asik way back when. It may appear like an overpay but really isn't and its short-term coinciding with when they need to pay other guys down the track. OKC and Boston were the only teams that played Dallas well this past playoff, they are right there for a chip. This makes total sense for them to do. I like it.
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?
Gar: I never said that and correct me if I'm wrong.
KC: You were asked that question at the news conference announcing Thibodeau's dismissal and you answered yes

Ah Asik, man, he was such an understated guy, but he was such a solid player (when healthy), and an absolute brick wall. I hadn't thought of him for quite some time, but I'm glad his name has been brought up, because I enjoyed watching him play. It's a shame that injuries derailed his career though.
Why so serious?

AKME picked Lavine and Vuc over Laurie. How does ownership reconcile that decision? Laurie is the hottest trade piece right now, and you can’t even give either of these guys away with out rehabilitating their value next season. Lonzo has more value as an expiring contract. $80 million in bad money.

To be fair, the year Lauri left he was averaging 13.6 pts, 5 rebounds, .9 assists, 40% from three and needed a new contract. Not much more than Pat Will, with worse defense. Lavine averaged 27 pts, 5 rebounds 5 assists that season, 42% from 3 at 25 yrs old. Vucevic averaged 25 pts, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 40% from 3. They were both rated CONSIDERABLY higher than Markannen at the time. Lauri averaged 15 and 6 the next year. They also added Derrick Jones Jr, a first and a second in the Lauri trade. Plus we added Lonzo that summer with Lauri's money, avg 14 pts, 5 rebounds 6 assists and shot from 11th to first in the East before he got hurt.

So it's more like Lauri at the time, 4 yrs $67 mill, vs Ball 4 yrs/80 mill, plus DJJ, a first and a second. Lonzo doesn't get injured and we get good players with those picks, deal looks far different. It looks clear cut now, not nearly so much back then, especially for a team that was trying to win now.

And given Lauri's stellar play for Utah, why are they shopping him rather than just extending him on a Max deal. Rumor is GS would try to work a deal centered aroung Kuminga (who is younger and cheaper) plus pick(s) and other assets for Lauri.

Warriors pretty confident in that Lauri deal. I hope it backfires

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

Man, this CBA is terrible. It has killed the excitement of the offseason that we have enjoyed in recent years. For some of us, the offseason transactions and strrategy is the most exciting part of the game. Its going to be very disappointing and bad for the league if this continues in future years.

When we signed Zach, the contract was still tradable. Now with the strict luxury tax apron penalities, teams just dont want to take on salaries at that level unless its a surefire star.

Woj regarding Donovan:
For Mitchell, it delivers a fast-path to the 10-year service criteria allowing him to pursue a 5-year, $380M-plus extension in 2027.

It's Woj so I assume the #s are right. Is the NBA seriously going to pay Mitchell $76M per year? He's not even All-NBA (Haliburton & Steph got the last 3rd team guard spots).

Such revisionist history here. "Not much more than Pat Will"

Even Lauri's worst year as a Bull was better than Pat's best year so far. Lauri was 1st team all-rookie in a strong rookie class and averaged 21 and 10 per 36 his second year and his downfall was largely due to how the organization handled him. He flashed actual star potential for long stretches of time, not just 2 games at the end of the season where both teams were sitting all their main guys. These are not comparable situations.

We should have kept him. I was saying it then and I'm saying it now. It was clear to me, and it should have been clear to everyone, that we were simply misusing him and hindering his development. He was finally put in a position to succeed and hey, he succeeded.

Yes and it’s gonna make sure that those types of money are reserved for real stars, and not a fringe like Zach. Half the time teams give players the max due to consideration of how tradable the contract is, and this new CBA will make it so teams will think twice about giving out max’s, which will lead to players getting paid closer to their true market value. It’s not a bad thing - you needing to earn your pay seems like a fair concept - but it will take a few offseasons to adjust.

If the contract numbers are smaller, I think the rapid player movement like in yesteryears can come back.

More like AK's "cap experts" didn't get a pulse on where the league is heading.

I'm just a "realGM." I didn't want to resign them, but I would've signed off on keeping them as opposed to letting them walk.

But surely they should have a better finger on what's going to happen in the league, than me. They resigned Zach and Vuc as if things were gonna be the same as they were the prior 5y.

It is a game of musical chairs and DeMar just got caught standing. That is rough man. He is a good dude and I was hoping the Clippers would pay him to take PG's slot, but the new apron rules meant teams like LAC and GSW weren't willing to make those deals.

We're seeing a lot of teams this summer make concerted efforts to get below the tax. I think as Bulls fans that largely pay attention to the Bulls we think we're unique in our tax avoidance, but that's really not the case.

Golden State looks to have received the mandate from on high - you're not longer a competitor, get below the tax.

At the very least AK should've got a better deal for Markkanen. A role player (DDJ) plus a pick that might not ever convey is weak.

The Spurs got a better pick for Thad Young!

Its because Markkanen keeps Utah competitive just enough not to get a top 5 pick. And their team isnt good enough to really compete.

If the rumors Ive read are true Ainge has tried to pair Lauri with another good player but the cost was too high (for example, Mikal Bridges).

Ainge mentioned in his end of season presser there a big trade (before Mikal) where he felt close but didn't happen. People think he's talking about Jrue Holiday, and the talk was that Utah had the assets but Jrue wouldn't commit to resigning in Utah but he was willing to resign in Boston. And then he struck out on Mikal, and that was another one Mikal preferred NY so he'll probably resign there.

I think he was planning on competing with Lauri, but after striking out on Jrue & Mikal due to players preferring another city, he may be thinking he needs to build on rookie contracts where they have control.

And if I was in his shoes, I would totally do the same thing.
