Tatum just signed the largest deal ever for an NBA player. They're gonna have to make some difficult decisions in Boston in the not-too-distant future to avoid the second luxury tax apron.

And the ownership group just put the Celtics up for sale as well.
When they do not repeat as champs next hear, the tear down will begin.

Makes my head dizzy remembering when the top paid player was KG or Shaq just under $30M per season.

Maybe this is why the Celtics owner is thinking about cashing out now. The Celtics are at their peak.
Secondly Tatum got paid, as he should. Yet White who was integral to their success, leaves money on the table by signing a very team friendly deal. I don't get it, it's not like he has been signing big contracts like a Tobias Harris or Jrue Holiday for several seasons. But if White likes it I love it for him.

I feel bad for the ring chasers who join the Celtics after next year thinking Brown or Tatum are going to bring them to the promise land. They’re going to be completely cap strapped with two secondary stars.

Regarding Hartenstein, a better way to justify his salary is by comparing him to Gobert. Hartenstein's pay largely reflects his defensive skillset, as he has tallied elite steals and block numbers and is highly regarded by defensive analytics. Additionally, he is more mobile than Gobert (remember that chase-down block on Maxey to win a playoff game?) and is a more reliable scorer. Most importantly, he seems to be an excellent complement to Chet on paper.

Re: Around the League: 2023-24 Season
If I were the Celtics, I would have traded Tatum for Ingram. Ingram would have been more cost-effective.
Starting lineup:
Jrue Holiday
Derrick White
Jaylen Brown
Brandon Ingram
Kristaps Porzingis
This lineup offers insane length. Even if there's a slight talent downgrade, the Celtics would still maintain their versatility.

Was never going to happen
Celtics are also being sold & wording of the announcement suggests a deal is already in place so new owners would be on board with massive contracts

Knicks were trying to get him for 20 or less. If I were leaving NYC for OKC, it would take that kinda bag

Not directed at you, but it always strikes me as funny when people (mainly the media) harp on money "left on the table" when a player signs for less than every penny he could have gotten. White signed for $128 million, and it's not like his earning power stops in four years. He and his family are set up for generations.
Maybe he took 'less' because he found a place that perfectly fits his game, he's on a winning team, and it's a place where his family likes living. Nice to occasionally see someone place value in something besides scarfing up every last dollar.

Hartenstein's numbers don't show the impact he has on a game, which is so often the case with numbers. I don't like the Gobert comp because Hartenstein is so much more on the offensive end. He's an excellent passer and an incredibly smart player who was a perfect P&R partner for Brunson, which they will miss. And this is besides being a relentless offensive rebounder. I believe the Knicks are going to miss him a lot more than people think.

I also believe that productive bigs who can perform well in both big and small lineups hold significant value. This is why someone like Nic Claxton, despite being a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, is getting paid less.

It's OK we can have civil discourse. You are not wrong, yes it is not necessary to get every penny you can and if you like where you are then great. Like I said in my last sentence, if White likes it I love it for him. BUT in taking a smaller contract he makes it a lot easier for the Celtics to move him when push comes to shove. Right now even if he got as much as he could/can the Celtics are not breaking up the team. But KP is always injured, Holiday is heading into retirement and White with his reasonable contract and age is the most movable piece and taking a reasonable contract makes it that more easier to move him. But I could be wrong.
And as far as White and generational wealth....come on man, in the 2023-2024 season, White could not even afford a decent haircut. Now he has generational wealth !? It's quite obvious he spends it as quickly as he makes it.

Cleveland finally got the Mitchell extension done. So hopefully the trade market gets rolling again.

Re: Around the League: 2023-24 Season
Calling my shot, Hartenstein will fade into obscurity. A starting caliber center, but not top 10. This is a classic overreaction based on two playoff series, one of which he overperformed against a sackless Sixers team.

White left money on the table? He got a 4-126 extension. That's 31.5M per. I'm not sure how many teams would be lining up to outbid that. He's a great role player, not a star.

Re: Around the League: 2023-24 Season
For now, OKC will be the team to beat next season. Their team reminds me of the Celtics' two-way talent, depth, and versatility, but with a much better alpha in SGA.
Play big:
SGA
Caruso
Jalen Williams
Chet Holmgren
Isaiah Hartenstein
Play Small:
SGA
Caruso
Dort
Jalen Williams
Chet Holmgren
That lineup will be a nightmare for both bigs and guards on opposing teams.

Was I not being civil?
Excellent points about making it easier to move him if things go south, and I agree about this Celtics team not necessarily being the long term juggernaut the media is making them out to be. A lot of moving parts there.

Re: Around the League: 2023-24 Season
The Magic just renegotiated and extended Jonathan Isaac? Am I to interpret that as they tore up his old deal and just started from scratch and gave him a new one?
Didn't even know you could do that.
5 years 84M btw. That is 16.8M per.
If he can stay healthy at all it will be worth it, but no indication to this point he's capable of staying healthy.
