Re: iHart expected to sign with OKC 3/$87
It sucks losing Hartenstein on a win now team, but i read last week an analysis that the contract he would have signed with the Knicks would not have been viewed as a positive asset. And for the team with long term payroll concerns, you can't just pay everyone. This just is what it is, but there should have been a better plan in place.
For an all-in, win now team the center position is very concerning. It seems like the most likely outcome here is running back Mitch/Precious/Sims. Is that good enough? I wanted the Knicks to go for Flipowski - his skill set would have been a perfect I-Hart replacement, actually would have given the Knicks more floor spacing without losing much in the way of rim protection.
It's very disappointing that the Knicks have punted the draft the past few years. This is the perfect situation for a guy on a rookie contract to step into the backup role for a year and then replace Mitch as the starter. Frankly, they need to start thinking about developing a young guy to replace Josh Hart on the roster as it's going to be difficult to carry his contract once Brunson's max + Bridges and Randle's new deal kick in. Cost controlled talent with upside is a major, major need on this roster going forward - in addition to rim protection and more shot creation.

Instead of the pessimism that has seemingly permeated the fanbase I've decided to be in charge of morale during the summer. I'm looking at iHart's departure as a positive. A sign the Knicks has become a success to the extent our players are wanted and valued around the league. Thirty million for iHart?! Man, Thibs and Co. did their thing coaching up a backup player into a league-leading defender and rebounder suitable for a Western Conference contender. It's just a matter of time until Rose and WWW manage to lord finesse some amateur GM out of an undervalued center our coaching staff can mold into our next difference-making big man just in time for our title run next April.
It is written.

Filipowski is too far gone to fit on this team

The problem with Mitch is it’s a skills league now and starting an offensively challenged player deep into the playoffs is dangerous.
The Celtics are great because offensively everyone of their starters are skilled and is a threat. You can’t lay off any of their players and leave them open.

drafting guys in the 50's is a lot different than drafting and developing first round picks who are ready to step in and be rotation players.

Great time for me to once again bitch about not finding a way to retain Jalen Duren. Ouch.
But maybe we get someone unexpectedly even better, IHart PII,

To a point true but OG and Bridges are the great+ equalizer’s.
Let’s see what we get…

Did I once mention Jalen Duran? I mentioned using a late 1st rd pick in 2024 on a high floor guy that's fits a skill set of need. And an overall organizational approach to not foucs on developing talent.
Case in point - not the 2nd rd picks to squeeze under the apron - but not having a player on the roster drafted by the team in the 2022 and 2023 nba drafts. That's punting on developing players.
You and I my might disagree with the direction of this organization, but facts are facts. The Knicks have not been investing in the draft. Under the new CBA - I feel strongly that this is a mistake that will come back and bite us in the a**.

Re: iHart expected to sign with OKC 3/$87
What we fail to appreciate is that Leon, Wes, Aller, Thibs and team have gone over this for months and have plans B and C ready. They have agent insiders, and surely have been speaking with iHart's agent all along. How do I figure? Just look at how they drafted, not one early big grabbed.
Check it, once these 1st rounders are signed and fitted into their new team's cap, there will be casualties and good fruit shaken out.
For example, the Blazers have 3-4 bigs and STILL drafted Clingan.
A small sample size of the cost of signing 1st rounders;
1 $10,474,200 $10,998,100 $11,521,700 26.1% 40.0%
2 $9,371,400 $9,840,200 $10,308,900 26.2% 40.5%
3 $8,415,800 $8,836,300 $9,257,400 26.4% 41.2%
4 $7,587,600 $7,967,100 $8,346,600 26.5% 41.9%
5 $6,871,100 $7,214,400 $7,558,000 26.7% 42.6%
6 $6,240,600 $6,552,700 $6,864,900 26.8% 43.4%
7 $5,697,000 $5,982,000 $6,266,600 27.0% 44.1%
8 $5,219,100 $5,480,100 $5,741,100 27.2% 44.8%
9 $4,797,400 $5,037,500 $5,277,300 27.4% 45.5%
10 $4,557,600 $4,785,400 $5,013,000 27.5% 46.2%
11 $4,329,600 $4,546,300 $4,762,800 32.7% 46.9%
12 $4,113,300 $4,319,100 $4,524,800 37.8% 47.6%
13 $3,907,500 $4,103,100 $4,298,400 42.9% 48.3%
14 $3,712,400 $3,898,000 $4,083,800 48.1% 49.1%
We don't need to sign a big man passer, we have added Mikal. We just need a young tenacious big, rebounder, who loves to run, plays with a high IQ and protects the rim. What would that cost? One of our recent draft picks and maybe another future 2nd?
We need to obtain a new iHart, that we signed on the cheap and transformed into a semi-big man star.
In Leon we trust.

Exactly. Look, iHart was released from the Clippers for nothing and look how the team developed him. He was making about $1.7 million when the Knicks signed him from the Clippers.
There are plenty of young bigs who can't break into a lineup but have nice skills to play 10 minutes a game right off the rip.
Watch, Leon is playing chess.

My guess is they don't really like the free agent options and are working on a trade either soon or later in the year.
Yup. In fact, most of our current roster is later picks. Some we even made ourselves.

Hart - 30th
Mitch - 36th
OG - 23rd

drafting guys in the 50's is a lot different than drafting and developing first round picks who are ready to step in and be rotation players.
Per history, guys late in the 1st and in the second round are usually ready to contribute to winning and being rotation players much faster than lottery picks. They may have less upside as star players or 2nd options, but they are usually where you find rotation pieces
Yup. In fact, most of our current roster is later picks. Some we even made ourselves.
Brunson -33rd
Hart - 30th
Mitch - 36th
OG - 23rd
Deuce - 36th
Sims - 58th
Toppin - Undrafted
On the flip side, the defending champions are anchored by 4 top 4 picks, with 7 1st rd picks in the lineup:
Brown - 3rd
Tatum - 3rd
Holiday - 17th
Porzingis- 4th
White - 29th
Horford - 3rd
Pritchard - 26th

They have agent insiders, and surely have been speaking with iHart's agent all along. How do I figure? Just look at how they drafted, not one early big grabbed.
Check it, once these 1st rounders are signed and fitted into their new team's cap, there will be casualties and good fruit shaken out.
For example, the Blazers have 3-4 bigs and STILL drafted Clingan.
A small sample size of the cost of signing 1st rounders;
1 $10,474,200 $10,998,100 $11,521,700 26.1% 40.0%
2 $9,371,400 $9,840,200 $10,308,900 26.2% 40.5%
3 $8,415,800 $8,836,300 $9,257,400 26.4% 41.2%
4 $7,587,600 $7,967,100 $8,346,600 26.5% 41.9%
5 $6,871,100 $7,214,400 $7,558,000 26.7% 42.6%
6 $6,240,600 $6,552,700 $6,864,900 26.8% 43.4%
7 $5,697,000 $5,982,000 $6,266,600 27.0% 44.1%
8 $5,219,100 $5,480,100 $5,741,100 27.2% 44.8%
9 $4,797,400 $5,037,500 $5,277,300 27.4% 45.5%
10 $4,557,600 $4,785,400 $5,013,000 27.5% 46.2%
11 $4,329,600 $4,546,300 $4,762,800 32.7% 46.9%
12 $4,113,300 $4,319,100 $4,524,800 37.8% 47.6%
13 $3,907,500 $4,103,100 $4,298,400 42.9% 48.3%
14 $3,712,400 $3,898,000 $4,083,800 48.1% 49.1%
We don't need to sign a big man passer, we have added Mikal. We just need a young tenacious big, rebounder, who loves to run, plays with a high IQ and protects the rim. What would that cost? One of our recent draft picks and maybe another future 2nd?
We need to obtain a new iHart, that we signed on the cheap and transformed into a semi-big man star.
In Leon we trust.
I had no idea Ihart had agents from CAA until aread it some where yesterday afternoon. At that point I knew Leon and the FO prepared for him leaving and I'm sure they found out before the world and before most of those centers that signed /resigned
over the last two days...
You make some excellent points....
