I hope for his sake that settling for a small deal and getting into a well-coached org is enough of a kick in the pants to get him to capitalize on his immense physical gifts.

He was actually playing decent basketball for us in detroit by the end of the year. Not good by any stretch of the imagination, but someone got through to him that if he just rebounds , sets screens, and plays defense, he might have a long NBA career. Can't say I'm not really sad to see him go because I think that really is his "upside" at this point. "Servicable backup big" would be a big leap up from where he's been.

Yeah that was always his always his biggest problem in GS - he wanted to be "the man" and would pout if he didn't get enough touches/plays run for him, didn't put in the effort on D and on the boards, etc.

If he can internalize that his path to a long NBA career is to defend, rebound, and set hard screens, he could definitely salvage a long career given his size and athletic gifts.

The upside of this signing is Wiseman doesn't play a minute and therefore doesn't hurt Indy. The downside is he plays minutes.

In 2 separate locations, after he plays about half a season worth of games with the team, he starts improving. This guy doesnt seem dumb or unmotivated, he's underdeveloped. 3 college games. Missed 3 out of 4 training camps due to COVID or injury. Some good health and a consistent location will really help him, even if the reward isnt massive. Point is, there's a pattern here in his development if people can look past the draft capital he used

also re: pouting... I prefer non-fiction. He didn't know where to go off-ball, because he never had been off ball in his career. He has to learn a new type of game, and he wasn't very confident. Some GS fans take that personally and attribute it to selfishness, but he weirdly enough seems to improve over time in those systems. Not what you'd expect from someone who pouts or thinks they should be a centerpiece. This ain't Ayton

I have wanted Wiseman in Indy for years so I love this. Pacers have had a lot of success turning around talented underachievers over the years, see Nesmith and Toppin on the current team, so I can't wait to see what they do with this big guy. At worst, a little wasted time. At best, the future replacement for Turner

The next Kwame Brown . . . but Kwame did have a 12 year NBA career, fwiw.

if he can keep bigger centers off the boards, he'll have a role situationally behind Myles. as for pouting, we've got a bunch of players that cheer each other on.

He's like a late 1st / early 2nd project big.. if he wasnt drafted #2 overall to a nationally focused team, there wouldnt be all these strange narratives around him. If history is any indicator, he'll struggle at first as he learns where to go, and then show improvement after around 40-50 games. If the Pacers want to wait around for that, they might get a solid player out of it. Seems like a great risk:reward ratio there for the Pacers

His best is more like "backup center". He's tall and athletic, but he doesn't see the play and his decision making is just bad. He only looks servicable when he's not trying to do too much. I'd be shocked if he ever excels at a more complicated role. I spent all year yelling at the TV "just be tall!" Rebound, set screens, play big down low. That's ALL you want him doing. Some players have incentives in their deals. He needs a "decentive". Every time he calls for the ball in the post, he loses $50k.

I think the risk is low enough at this point to take a gamble on at this point for the Pacers

Pistons fans here.

What to expect.

PROS

Wiseman is an intelligent dude, with amazing physical gifts.

CONS

Have you ever seen cat videos where someone flicks a cat toy in front of its face, and the cats reaction is about a half second behind due to age/vision problems?

This is Wiseman in a nutshell. His timing is horrendous, and doesn't seem to have full control over his body, at any given time. There seems to be a delay in his nervous system. I am not being mean, nor am I joking. He just doesn't have command over the size of his body.

He'll look amazing for a few plays, then short circuits, and is lost as hell on defense, and then commits a brutal foul for being so out of position.

Good luck, and maybe he'll grow into his frame size.

I wanted the Grizz to give him a shot as 3rd center.

If I’m right, the Pacers regret this as, at best, a wasted roster spot.

If I’m wrong, certainly a value signing.

In either case, I’m happy, because I’m tired of watching this guy play.

We needed a third center who would accept a minimum or near minimum deal. We got that. At this point we don't know how much is guaranteed should he flop.

I’ll take the other side of this. Wiseman has looked consistently confused about where to go and what to do on a basketball court. He doesn’t have a natural feel for the game, is constantly out of position, and really has to stop and think every time he touches the ball.

Having said all of that I don’t mind the signing, he’ll probably spend time with the Mad Ants and who knows how he develops. He’s actually the same age as the Pacers latter two second round picks.

I'm ok with Wiseman on a minimum contract. He's only 23, so playing with Turner maybe Wiseman can learn to block shots and play some defense. Roster looks set now. Looking forward to the new season the Pacers look pretty solid.

Thats the same side :D

I'm saying he's raw and a slow learner, what I was arguing against was that he's selfish. He's easy to rattle, but when he starts getting confident with himself, he can have spurts where he seems to get it. Followed by the usual crash right after.. but if you look at his development environment compared to most prospects, he's had it rougher than most. For raw bigs, usually want to see an upward trend.. if you look at his metrics with the Warriors, he was rising as he was dealt to Detroit. Then he dropped down, fast. After about 50 games with Detroit, started rising again..

He's still well below where he needs to be to be a consistent rotation player, but as an upside punt? There's a lot to like about it. No risk, medium reward
