Woj: Bron Takes the Max
Over the 2nd Apron... "This means no trades for the Lakers where they aggregate player salaries going out. And no trades for the Lakers where they take back more money than they send out in trade."
"When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world...
... NO, YOU MOVE."
... NO, YOU MOVE."

Nice. Love that he take what he’s worth.

Would have thought he could have given them atleast 550k so they were under 2nd apron. This seems to be almost out of pettiness

I think Lebron has shown that he is willing to sacrifice financially if it is worth it, but if it isn't he wants to get paid. The 1 + 1 is essentially an insurance policy. He likely opts out again next summer which will give the Lakers a range of possibilities to improve the team with Lebron's cooperation.
As it stands now, the only real additions are a healthy Vanderbilit/Vincent - which will help the Lakers - and Dalton Kenecht. Kenecht's potential as a knock down shooter off the bench is something Lebron hasn't really had as a Laker - even if as a rookie he's a poor man's Kyle Korver.
Russell/Reaves/Vanderbilit/James/Davis
Vincent/Chrisite/Kenecht/Rui
I do think the closing lineup in the playoffs of Vincent/Reaves/Vanderbilit/James/Davis has a chance to be very good on both sides of the court.
Looks like a solid play-in team, with the caveat that if you get James/Davis healthy in the playoffs and the matchups work in LA's favor they can go on a run.

I’m guessing Derozen was not receptive to the MLE so they just moved forward.

I'm still hoping they get desperate and send us a FRP and DLo or Rui or something into our cap.

I don’t bother LBJ over a little 500K. Dump Wood for a true vet min if there’s no bigger deal out there. Should be easy.
I think it’s worded that the team has to be over the apron after the trade, not before the trade anyways though.
Good for LBJ obviously, maybe he gave them a chance to improve roster and then when they failed - he took the money. Good for him.
Don’t care how expected him resigning was, it’s still great for LAL.

Maybe Dlo should take a paycut because he's the one that sucks not Lebron.

As a Lebron fan im happy for him. He tried to give the lakers a chance, they just shot the bed and he couldn’t wait that long he has to hit play with team USA here in a few days.
2nd Apron is crazy expensive for a play in team though.

I'm pretty sure that's correct. So the second apron thing is funny but ultimately doesn't change what they can do in a significant way. They were always going to have to send out more salary than they took back because of the first apron rules.

It doesn’t make any difference because they can’t aggregate and go over the apron. He’d have to give a discount of a few million to make any difference in flexibility.
Sending out more money than they take in for a trade hard caps at the first apron, so that’s off the table unless he takes a huge discount.

Yeah, and they’re already at 15 bodies.
So the filling the roster after the aggregating trade isn’t as a big a factor. Probably hoping to do a 3-4 for 1 trade and bring back 5-7 million less in a trade to sign 2-3 vet mins..
Which seems pretty easy to draw up.

Re: Woj/Shams - Lebron back to Lakers on 2 year max
Thought a three year contract was expected?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I just ran it for curiosity's sake; if they were to trade, say, Dlo/Rui/Vincent for LaVine, they would have enough space to sign a vet min and stay under the apron with 14 bodies. Maybe even use part of the tax MLE if they move Christian Wood for a true vet min like you suggest.

Maybe now that he's ensured he can witness his son being embarrassed on the NBA court from as close a range as possible, he doesn't necessarily want to play past 25-26?

Say the Lakers wanted Zach Lavine (of course they don’t but he is an easy example.) Under the 2nd apron they could add players together to equal his contract and complete the trade (Dlo+Rui+?= Lavine money.) over the 2nd apron, they can only trade for someone making the exact same amount as Lavine or above his salary in a 1 to 1 exchange (the official term is they cannot aggregate salaries.) Now the inverse is not effected. Other teams could send LAL four players for AD, but the Lakers cannot send out players to acquire more help very easily.

Yeah exactly. So to keep this example going, they could trade Dlo/Rui/Vincent (combined $46.7M) for Lavine ($43M) because the trade would reduce their salary number enough to get under the second apron (with the appropriate roster holds factored in). But the trade would also hard cap them at the second apron, because they aggregated salaries to acquire Lavine. So they would basically be limited to Lavine + whoever they could sign with the vet min to fill out their 14th roster spot.
(and just for the record, this is only about the salary cap math, not a commentary on value or whether either team should or should not do this)
