U17 Fiba World Cup 2024

Post#1 » by peZt » Sat Jun 29, 2024 4:51 pm

Saw no thread for this year's u17 Fiba World Cup. Games started today, USA beat France in their opener fueled by a great performance by Cam Boozer (with Carlos Boozer watching on the sidelines)

I think the 2007 generation in Europe is a bit weak. Some names I know and who are decent

- Nathan Soliman - France (is actually just 15)
- Declan Duru - Germany
- Derin Can Ustun - Turkey
- Maikcol Perez - Italy

Boozer looked like his dad in the post. Just too big.

Boozer's been a dominant amateur for so long, you wonder what happens once he matches up with guys who are just as good as him. Still, Carlos has obviously taught his sons a thing or twelve.

Duru has been pretty underwhelming as of late, he's very limited technically, just a hustle guy.
The spanish team has a buch of promising prospects, Del Pino, Gimenez, Plateew, Huelves are all pretty good but my favourite Sergi Kemu.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

France losing to China was unexpected.
Sinan Huan looks really intriguing.

Unexpected considering the preparation for sure, and the potential of many players. But our centers and bigs are a major problem. They can't defend properly (lots of fouls), many bonehead plays on both ends, no good picks in offense to help our guards, a very poor iq overall, no back to the basket game and we are as usual suffering on zone Defenses.

Yimga Monkouri is the only bright spot. Being 16, he's justifying the hopes, showing he can compete on both ends. But he's a one man team right now. Even Soliman is quite disappointing (but he's 15, and physically he has a hard time finding his spots).

France just got eliminated by Puerto Rico too. Quinones scored 42 points. This probably just isn't a strong class of players for France.
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.

2007 is not the strongest class for France but they did not select their best prospect : Hugo Facorat, a 6'11 forward with great shooting and athleticism. Atamna, the best scorer of the class was not selected too.
Yimga (2008) was great and Soliman is still a great prospect but it was not enough. Coaching was very poor, the coach did not select the best players and they did not play as a team

The U17 team for the US is unbelievable. I'm not sure we can get a ton of information about them from this context other than that they are overwhelming in their age group. I do love watching Koa Peat direct the defense, Dybantsa is such a smooth player, Boozer is overwhelming physically with some nice skill for his size, McCoy had some great moments ...
