1+PO has it's advantages, and really ultimate control over the Lakers;
1) Lebron can't be trade unless he agrees, he's basically a 1 year rental
2) It forces the FO to make changes under the implied threat of him leaving
3) If he gets hurt at this age, he's ensured another big pay year.

Now that Bronny is set and gets to play with his dad and make history, I can see LeBron leaving at the end of the season if the team fails in the playoffs again.

Whatever you think about LeBron James, this is one thing he has said for a decade+ now and is staying true to his word.

Yeah, I think the people who believe he took a one and one *on order to help the Lakers next summer* are engaged in a good deal of cope. He offered to take less to bring in specific players and none of those players came.

I think he plays with his son this season and surveys the landscape next summer.

Question, if Lebron gives up a mil or whatever to get the team under the 2nd apron, they'll have the tpmle to sign a player in FA, would DeRozan take 5.2 to play at home and seek more money next offseason?

He'd have to give up the full amount of the TMLE plus however much they are currently over the second apron to make that work.

This feels like Kobe's retirement contract to me.

None of those players were realistic options at the MLE except Jonas V. Harden signed for $35M/year and Klay signed for $16.7M. It was about genuine as my giving up my life savings for my sister willingly.

Under the 2nd apron they could add players together to equal his contract and complete the trade (Dlo+Rui+?= Lavine money.) over the 2nd apron, they can only trade for someone making the exact same amount as Lavine or above his salary in a 1 to 1 exchange (the official term is they cannot aggregate salaries.) Now the inverse is not effected. Other teams could send LAL four players for AD, but the Lakers cannot send out players to acquire more help very easily.

As long as they end up under the Apron post-trade, it's legal. So they'd need to send almost $45M out in salary. They'd need to send D'Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, and likely one of Gabe Vincent or Jarred Vanderbilt. I think the issue is the Lakers aren't inclined to take on the Bulls' issue, and definitely not without significant incentive.

Don’t forget a 3 for 1 must result in the Lakers signing bodies at the minimum to refill the roster to 14.

JV signed for $10M per with the Wizards

Just going through the math.

D'Angelo Russell - $18,692,307
Rui Hachimura - $17,000,000
Jarred Vanderbilt - $10,714,286
Total: $46,406,593

Zach LaVine - $43,031,949

Savings - $3,374,644
Below 2nd Apron - $1,455,660
NBA Minimim Salary: $1,157,153

So they'd technically be about ~300k below the apron, and still be able to squeeze under the 2nd apron and be legal within the 14 man roster limit.

Hence the reason why I said he was the ONLY player reportedly that would be available for the MLE. I'd venture a guess that the Lakers weren't really all that interested in Jonas V IF he signed with the Wizards for 3 years, $30M.

yeah it’s great! Keeps the Lakers in mediocrity.

Doesn’t impact whatever lakers going do, just how much tax they need pay but at least we won’t have threads whereby future stars take ridiculous pay cuts when they are in their 30s just because 40yo LeBron take a small paycut.

Kobe is my favorite player ever, but that last contract was insane. With a torn Achilles he got a two-year extention at 48.5m on top of his 30m. The cap was at 65m or something.

It completely torpedoed any chance at adding another star.

The correct move would have been to flip Pau (at his peak value), let Kobe get back, tank (for Wiggins) and retool the next summer.
