Why not go all the way and call him a poor man's Luka?

I worry a little bit about Shei’s shot at the NBA level. He very much has an average release point and shoots more of a set shot. Summer league will be an interesting indicator if he can start to get that off consistently against NBA length.
Great post. This is the real question here, not the navelgazing about "defense". Can he actually shoot the lights out in the NBA, given his shooting form? Hauser has a lightning release from a high release point. Scheierman doesn't appear to get the ball out that quickly or from that high. Perhaps the lefty aspect helps in the regular season. But how he fares against NBA length is the million dollar question. If he passes that test, he'll be in the rotation sooner or later.
I’m not sure he’s going to shoot the lights out like Hauser but he should be able to get his shots.
Agree Hauser has a higher and quicker release but he wasn’t imo a great mover into his shots. Scheierman should be much more adept early on in moving into his shot - made the analogy earlier he will be more like KP in that he won’t shoot a crazy percentage but he is a more difficult guard than someone like Al who needs to be a lot more set in his shot prep.
In other words KP/Scheierman are guys that have a lot more flexibility in how and where they get their shots off whereas Hauser and Al are toes on the line, catch and shoot guys.
NBA teams (probably Boston) told Scheierman to go back to school and emphasize his passing skills and not just rely on his three point shot and he still led the Big East in 3PAs.

It's the first thing I thought watching a whole **** ton of highlights after the C's drafted him. Luka is one of the top 3 guys in the league so I'd call him a homeless man's Luka without seeing him play against NBA competition, it's purely a play style comparison and not a homer take on talent. It's the ground bound but still good at getting their shot off, still good at rebounding, and making good plays similarities but Luka does it at an elite level against NBA competition while Baylor did it as a 5 year college player albeit against good competition. There is also similarity in their midrange game, making contact and falling away to get clearance for a shot.
I'm optimistic Baylor's floor will be solid role player which is great value at pick 30 but I'm always optimistic about rookies so I take my own opinion with a grain of salt.

Fair enough. And when you can't be optimistic about rookies, it's time to stop following sports.

I can’t remember everything he said but he said the Celtics said work on his body, he needed to get stronger. They said he’s already got the play, needs the body. I think they told him something else but I watched the interview days ago.

That's what they said to him when they brought him in when he was exploring the draft in the previous year. He went back to college and worked on that.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Baylor Scheierman!
I wonder if Baylor can make Pritchard expendable. I think PP can be a starter in the league but can he eventually be a starter here? If he cant start here, then does it make sense to trade him for someone with starting potential at another position?
Im thinking sometime down the road we trade 7 million Pritchard contract for a potential big that allows us to move on from KP

Main rotation guys on championship teams could start on a bad team somewhere else. But Jrue's not getting younger, players get hurt, and Davison is still, if not forever, going to be a project. I don't think you'll end up getting as good a player back and with their payroll status they can't combine him in a trade anyway. Fingers crossed on Tillman and Queta for now.
Also, Pritchard's only 2 years younger than Porzingis. Fingers crossed on his recovery.

I think Luka's likely to slim down a bit this season, and he's notably only 1 1/2 years older than Scheierman, whom I guess we can therefore now call a lefty, slightly younger, homeless man's Luka with slightly less girth.

Homeless Luka with defense

Although I don't want anything to do with Luka. His basketball brand is boring. And he gets all the calls. And he is whining non stop

I mentioned this type of possibility earlier in this thread :
Picking Scheierman is an extremely measured decision. It is more than just picking him and seeing how it works. Last year they turned a #25 overall pick for essentially 5 second round picks. With the punishing salary cap implications of keeping a first round pick , why didn't they just do the same thing with the 30th pick?
A possibility. They feel he can replace Hauser. The Celtics sign Hauser to a contract similar to Pritchard. They wait to see what Scheierman can really do and say he is what they expect. If he is they use Hauser's new salary towards getting a legitimate big player (Mark Williams, Nick Richards, Walker Kessler?)
Personally I'd love to see Queta get quality minutes at center as well to see if he is a keeper. But with the uncertainty of Porzingis injury and Horford's age, this may be the path (or trading Pritchard) to get a big. The mid level exception is a thing of the past for the Celtics.
Timing is everything here. Teams like the Knicks are also looking for a backup center to eat up minutes. So there will be competition. We know Kessler, will be expensive, so guys like Richards and Williams will be targets. Can they afford to see if Kornet, Tillman and Queta can hold down the fort while KP is out?
We may know a little more if they try to bring back Brissett. This thread is about Scheierman. I'd be surprised if they think Hauser, Scheierman and Brissett can coexist longer term.
While be both mention Pritchard in a possible trade we also know he fits in well for the Celtics, he would have to be replaced, and there is now a glut of wing players.
Brad Stevens on fans who want the Celtics to tank: "I don’t think they’ll like me all that much then."

I hope he can be a decent bench player at some point. That should be our expectation, he probably won’t even play on the Celtics at all this season. If he does it will be very little….

Re: Welcome to Boston, Baylor Scheierman!
Man hasn’t even done SL and he’s already here to replace a championship piece. I hope he is as great as everyone wants. While I feel Sam was too up and down in the playoffs, he helped win some games with a huge impact. You can’t just replace what he does and can do.
We’ll see, but no one with these lofty expectations should tear him down if he doesn’t live up to them.
Come on Rico, be who they say you can be!!!! We’ll need it!

If we're still calling him a poor man's Luka in 6 months, that's a superb sign!
