-could score at all 3 levels
-youngest player in the draft, fans love the young raw high upside talent that exponential growth guarantees development into a superstar. see:Frank
-hindsight was unavailable to us at the time to know who would be good in three years

If you could pick all the good players in any draft you would be the greatest gm of all time lol. Try it this year, they all look great in their highlight clips, even Hukporti the 58th pick :dontknow:

Because they were terrible, awful talent evaluators.

Next question.

Though Fizdale never scouted any college games this season, the new coach pushed hard for Knox after his 3-on-3 workout nearly two weeks ago, when Knox got the better of Michigan State’s Miles Bridges. Knicks president Steve Mills reiterated Knox’s willingness to do a 3-on-3 group workout showed his confidence. (Mikal Bridges agreed only to a solo workout).

It still blows my mind that they based it off of one workout.

Perry mills were horrible at drafting, wasted years of our top ten picks and just drafting crap player after crap player. So many missteps along the way with this team, Phil lucked into KP, yet couldn’t get the proper coach, assistant coach and surrounding players. We were a horrible franchise and Kevin Knox, Frankie n, were all part of that regime

I remember there was a report, Knicks were interested in Donovan Mitchell but Phill Jackson slept through his workout. And we ended up taking Frank while passing on Mitchell. Took Knox over Bridges, Porter, SGA. The front office was a disaster during those years.

This was the first Perry/Mills pick. Think the main reason they drafted him was because he was 19. That eliminated Mikal from the conversation. Then that 3v3 workout happened.

Perry & Mills & Fizdale looked at the wrong things at least for that pick. Fortunately, Mitch was able to reverse all the bad habits learned in that era.

All i Know is the overwhelming majority of the board wanted Mikal. I know they convinced me too that he should be the pick. I would have been just as happy with MPJ. I'm not going to pretend I wanted Shai

I, on the other hand, need to climb as high on that hill as I possibly can to drown out my multitudes of draft transgressions. But I really, really wanted SGA.

i def wanted Mital that draft, so many times we had a chance for better players, its like we didn’t have competent scouting or an eye for talent for 15+ years

All make sense. I remember wanting Trae Young because we needed to take a chance on a PG who could shoot. I remember drafting him and was like wtf his workout vids weren't good, scouting reports were eh.

The Frank draft was a joke, nothing said Frank would be good except he was a tall PG and could play some defense.

Yes I remember a lot of us on the board wanted Mikal during draft night. MPJ was too much of a risk. Crazy that all these players were available at our pick. We're usually on the outside looking in. But then we reached and selected Kevin Knox wearing his Fortnite suit. That suit was a huge sign he wasn't ready, that he's just a kid. He wasn't serious. Even Calipari warned the Knicks he will take time to develop, which is not a good sign when your college coach says that.

I would have been ok with the MPJ risk. We were awful and needed to tank. We should have been tanking that year but Mills want to to "compete"

these kind of hindsight exercises are fun but meaningless. You can't apply current context to decisions made years ago.
Unless it's a situation like Bagley over Luka or Bennett #1, where everyone was confused at the time, it's hard to criticize draft decisions.

This is why the most important component of winning isn't the player or the head coach...

The Knicks? There were the 2 guys in charge in 2018

Need more info? Now every front office makes mistakes but the good one's rarely make them and instead make good moves the majority of the time. The problem with Heckyl and Jeckyl is that bad moves were the norm and good moves the rare exception.

Mills was Dolan's most trusted employee. Perry is now writing weekly aphorisms on X-Twitter. What a nightmare they were for us.

This is what I posted here at the time

This was a pretty disappointing night by and large. I really wanted Trae Young -- I think our missing him by a few spots may wind up being somewhat of a reprise of Curry/2009 (though probably not that bad obviously). And yeah, had we taken Porter, at least you could dream about the upside. Kevin Knox reeks of a Jordan Hill-ish-type pick where the organization just really didn't have an idea, so it went with a perceived safe option. Meh, the sad reality is that there is not a single good basketball player on the New York Knicks. That includes KP. He is a good player for one month a year, that's it. That's all he's ever accomplished. I'm not saying this to be pessimistic, though -- I'm actually getting at the silver lining: 1.) We'll be back in this next year LOL; 2.) The bar is so low for Knox that if he's anything resembling a legitimate NBA talent, he'll soon be a fan favorite.
