Re: Celtics 2024-25, Season Thread
Tatum: Under contract through 2029 then player option.
Brown: Under contract through 2029.
White: Under contract through 2028 then player option.
I view that as the core of the team, Kristaps and Jrue are obviously still very important but due to injuries for KP and Jrue's age they'll like be the guys who end up getting moved or gone for tax reasons. So the big question going forward is how you replace those guys for cheap.
Won't be a problem this year, but going forward that's going to be the main question. The nice thing is the flexibility of White/Tatum/Brown who are all great defensively and can play on or off ball gives you a lot of flexibility for the 4th and 5th guys in a starting lineup.

Seems like a nice guy and I’m glad he went on to win a title in a supporting role and I think/hope he’s kind of stabilized in post-career adulthood. Seems kind of telling though that he hasn’t been “around” the Celtics at all — feels like maybe they keep him at a distance or at least don’t welcome him in, maybe there’s some hurt feelings between him and ownership?
He was brought back even after calling Ainge a snake, so I assume he must've done or said something worse during his second stint.
I liked Walker in the beginning, but then he became full of himself on and off the court. Enabled by Jim O'Brien, he made Celtics ball almost unwatchable. (Side note: according to Wikipedia, O'Brien is senior advisor for the Sixers. Not sure how up to date that info is.)

I mean, he was the only backup PG on the roster last season too..and that season turned out pretty good for us.
You also don't need as many backup PG's when you have 2 PG's in the starting lineup (Jrue, white) plus Tatum who plays a lot of PG as well..even JB brings the ball up and initiates actions quite a bit.
2023..nuggets only had Murray and reggie jackson for PG's and they won the title..2022 warriors basically only had Steph at PG and they won it all..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything

Scheierman and his former teammate that we draft next year .Ryan Kalkbrenner. We can draft him next year at 30. Slot in nicely for Jrue and KP….assuming they turn out to be good NBA players.

I'm fine with Kalkbrenner eventually backing up Queta as our new, healthy Rob Williams.

I watched his whole career with us and one problem is that Antoine shot the ball like a middle schooler who never really learned a standard jump shot.
Another problem was that he was given the keys to the kingdom from a very young age and once he started chucking — and stopped crashing the glass or working on his game or his body — no one could get through to him. He seemed to “age” super young — lost most of his lift, and quickness and agility — became a stationary shooter with poor form and percentages.
Toine was just a very untalented scorer inside and out when you look at him in retrospect through his numbers. I recall Toine being an unstoppable force down-low when he felt like attacking the rim but his numbers show that he was a career .542 shooter from 0-3 feet. His rookie season he took a whopping 62.1% of his shots at the rim and shot just 43% on them (which is a cautionary tale for those who want Tatum and Jaylen to force inside shots).
Because of terrible spacing, rim % leaguewide was likely much lower than it is today but at a quick glance .542 doesn't look to have been a very good figure even for back then, and also the Celtics were a 3pt shooting team.
You’re right on — Toine ahead of his time — what Angel Reese is doing now, he was doing in the late 90s (miss layup, put it back up, maybe do it again)
Paul Pierce appreciation society.

Toine was the prototype for Lebron but he didn’t have the vertical game. He didn’t have Lebron’s superior passing ability or vision but he was a gifted passer. Unlike Lebron, he played below the rim so when it mattered, other teams could easily take away his shot at the rim. He was so talented for his size he could easily get up 25-30 ‘decent’ shots per game but he just wasn’t good enough to knock them down and he didn’t get to the line either. He was almost a great NBA player. He may have been ahead of his time but even in today’s game his flaws would hold him back.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Closed the gap, I would say yes. But overtaken the Celtics, no.

• MIL 2021- 64% (PJ Tucker, Forbes)
• LAL 2020 - 60% (D. Green, Rondo)
• TOR 2019 - 82% (Kawhi, D. Green)
• GSW 2018 - 81% (Nick Young, David West)
• GSW 2017 - 81% (Ian Clark, Matt Barnes)
• CLE 2016 - 83% (Dellavedova, Mozgov)
• GSW 2015 - 95% (David Lee, Justin Holiday)
• SAS 2014 - 98% (de Colo, Shannon Brown)
• MIA 2013 - 91% (Mike Miller, Juwan Howard)

• DAL 2011 - 71% (Chandler, Barea)
• LAL 2010 - 85% (Jordan Farmar, Josh Powell)
• LAL 2009 - 87% (Trevor Ariza)
• BOS 2008 - 94% (Posey, Cassell)
• SAS 2007 - 87% (Udrih, James White)
• MIA 2006 - 92% (Shandon Anderson, Derek Anderson)
• SAS 2005 - 82% (Devin Brown, Glenn Robinson)
"Running it back" right after you've won the title is more the norm than the exception. Most of these champs brought back at least 4/5 of their roster (minutes-wise).
