Once again, we knew what kind of team Nick Nurse was eventually going to field. He wants switchable, versatile players who are athletes out there on the floor. It's why we kept Ricky Council once we discovered the gem that he was. KJ Martin did some good things for us last season when he had opportunities. He can't shoot, we know this, but he can defend, he's a high flying athlete, and he can crash the boards. Yeah...We might sign him with the intention of just trading him, but I hope he can actually stick and become something for us.
No. The Sixers can overpay him to create a 1 yr guaranteed contract that they can use after January 15th to trade for another asset. Doing it this way avoids the CBA's rules that would otherwise hardcap them which restricts what they can/can't do. Spelled out:
Sixers sign & trade KJ now - activates hardcap & hardcap penalties
Sixers sign KJ now - trade him in January - hardcap penalties are not triggered.
If the Sixers don't overpay him now - they won't have a tradable contract to match salaries with come January. This would also activate a hardcap and penalties.
Yeah man, I realize all that. I'm saying that even though that is probably the plan, I'm not putting it past him to actually be able to contribute to this team.
