No Brobley.

Surprise Bates is on the squad before they figure out his RFA situation but maybe he just practices and doesn't play.

Also no Diop this summer but did someone say he is hurt right now?Image

Bates is auditioning for an nba roster spot, makes sense for him to play. If he wants a little security he could just take whatever the Cavs are offering.

Didn't we extend the Q.O. to Bates? I'm at a bit pf a loss as to why he didn't sign it within minutes of it being offered.
He may want the security of a long term deal.

jbk might not realize it's a g-league QO? Basically chump change.

Why do we always do this? In this specific instance, i assume it was to appease Mitchell. I'm sure Kenny signed off on it but I understand it less than the previous 2 times we did it. Blatt and Beilein had zero expierence in the NBA so it made sense to hire an associate head coach from the search but i don't agree with having the backup plan on the staff already, awkward to me.

At any rate, Kenny's staff is starting to come together.

Somewhat...

Bryant is going to get calls for head coaching jobs in the future, he may very well be poached before Atkinson is done here, might even go back and get the Knicks job if Thibs hangs them up.

But he built his reputation as a player development guy who doesn't pussy foot around with players. He lets them know exactly what they should be doing and/or not doing.

Sounds like a great hire to me.

I'm not questioning the person so much as the idea.

Like i don't think Kenny needs an associate head coach. Even though it is pretty common now days to have one. So even if they were going to give him one, i don't think it needs to be a guy he was going against for the head coaching gig, like how jb and Lue also were.

To the coach himself, i hope what you say is true. He has that card he can play in his back pocket of how this exact team and core were punked by his former team lol

My guess is that Bryant interviewed for the HC job as a way to exit NY and become the associate HC in Cleveland. He had been under Thibs for a while and was ready to move on, and also has Mitchell's trust. HC candidates also look better if they've worked under the systems of multiple HCs. So it made sense for him to move laterally.

For us, we absolutely need the coaching staff to be on Mitchell's wavelength. No better guy than Bryant for that.

I just really like the idea of Dan spending his money in the one area there are no limits and that's to provide the best coaching and assistants. Sure, we're making Don happy but Don wants Bryant for all the right reasons.

As long as the hire wasn't shoved down Atkinson's throat, I think it's a sign he want's a strong staff and that he's willing to delegate to his assistants rather than trying to control everything himself. Compare to Bickerstaff hooking up again with Sydney Lowe in Detroit.

We'll see what Kenny has learned since his stint in Brooklyn, but building a coaching culture and a coaching tree of his own is hopefully one of them.

Yeah Mitchell did not align with jb at all, stylistically. Kenny and Johnnie are more his speed, having a guy on the staff that played for Kenny in his lone playoff apperance as a HC will be nice too (Carroll).

The Knicks aren’t letting you interview Johnnie for an assistant position. Cavs want to get to know folks and create bench strength. They talk to a lot of people because they won’t get that chance again for a while.

He was a lead assistant and well paid with the Knicks. You make the associate hire so you can promote him out of his contract and commensurately pay him.

I don’t think it’s any more complex than that. I doubt they are intentionally hiring Kenny’s replacement.

Well wiki says he was an associate head coach with the Knicks too, so it is a lateral move, by title.

But i agree with your thought that the only way they could get in the same room with him and some of these other guys is to have them interview for the HC position.

Idk if Lue and jb were hired with the thought they would replace Blatt and Beilein, necessarily, even though that is how it worked out. But the optics of it do not look great, imo and i don't really believe in coincidence.

Yep. The Knicks had to officially approve Bryant taking the lateral job with the Cavs. Usually that's not necessary for guys to take promotions elsewhere.

I don't think the optics of a good associate head coach look bad. You want an associate HC who could be a HC candidate if you're on a contender, whether it's to step in for a coach with a health problem (see Luke Walton in Golden State) or replace the head coach or scheme the defense while the HC schemes the offense.

It didn't look bad for Steve Kerr to have Atkinson as an assistant, after all. Didn't look bad for Thibs to have Bryant as an assistant.

Kerr and Kenny did not interview for the same job. Thibs and Johnnie did not interview for the same job, to my knowledge.

Having a good associate head coach is not the issue. If Ott was the associate head coach i don't think anyone bats an eye.

This is the 3rd consecutive coaching search where the Cavs hire 2 guys vying for the same role. It was weird to me the last 2 times and is even more weird this time because Kenny has been in the NBA for 16 years.

Also, is Johnnie even known for defense? I'm not sure i picked up on what his speciality even is supposed to be.

Are we capable of acquiring one of Can Johnson, Jerami Grant, Hachimura, Wiggins, or De'Andre Hunter without breaking up the core 4?

Cavs can only trade their 2031 first rounder, so probably not.

Just trying to match salary on some of those dudes may prove difficult, if we're dodging the tax again.

31.6% this past season on a foot closer to the basket 3 point line, so I'd say no.

Maybe he can take the Okoro role if he ends up elsewhere.

Another coach added, article makes mention of it but was my same thought, all these guys are known for player development. Which when a team makes zero free agency transactions, you're depending 100% on internal growth lol

I'm surprised Isaiah Mobley both did not receive a QO and also did not make the Summer League team. It isn't as if Isaiah is too good for Summer League.

But he's also shown up in an official team photo with his brother and Atkinson.

Not sure if he's moving to a non-playing role with the team or what.
