Trade Market For Lauri Markkanen Slows Down

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jul 9, 2024 4:31 am

The trade market for Lauri Markkanen has reportedly "calmed," according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

Markkanen has been linked with a move to several teams, including the Warriors, Kings, and Spurs.

It is believed that Markkanen would also be happy staying with the Jazz.

Markkanen is eligible for a contract extension on August 6.

If it's actually calm it's because teams now know the astronomical price the Jazz want for him not because teams don't want him(unlike say Trae Young)

That's the full story... although I think teams would want Trae if the asking price was a little lower as well.

Did Ainge overplay his hand, or will his patience be rewarded? It seems like all of the interested teams went in other directions.

The Warriors added a bunch of smaller contracts in Melton, Anderson, and Hield. The Kings added DeRozan. The Spurs added Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul.

It seems to me like the Jazz may end up waiting until late-December, when newly signed free agents can be traded, and possibly up until the trade deadline if they are going to move Lauri.

Ainge is taking unnecessary risk if he is trying to wait out these 3 teams to get desperate. Spurs is not going anywhere deep in playoff this season, so they are not going to mortgage their farm here. Kings just added DeRozen so if they do well why even bother. Ws has enough and as season goes on Kuminga (if rumor if him being included is true at all) will only become more valuable since he was easily the 2nd most consistent scorer last season and more opportunities for him now that Klay is gone. Ws will not increase the offer much. Yet Markkanen has only played 50 some games each season so Ainge is taking a big risk there if he chose to wait.

Yeah, I agree. I think he misplayed this one. We shall see!

I'm a big fan of Markannen. Like most here, I saw him play in that FIBA tournament (WC? I can't remember) before going to Utah and was sold. 7-footer with a really nice shot, plenty of athleticism, and a great finisher cutting to the basket. I'd really like to see him properly utilized on a good team.
