Re: With the 57th pick, the Raptors select Ulrich Chomche
I think the biggest keys for Chomche will be first and foremost, Chomche himself, his focus, work ethic and capacity to learn and grow.
The second and almost more important is Darko. Will Darko give him early development minutes at the NBA level? Will there be a path to minutes and a defined role eventually?
Bruno didn't have that under Casey, which I think ultimately was the biggest factor in terms of derailing his development.
Under Darko, so long as Chomche does what the team asks of him, I think we'll find him minutes here and there with the longer view in mind.

I’m of the mindset that we shouldn’t be stashing players. If we believe in our development system we should be trying to get our guys in the door as soon as possible. Why leave it up to chance to let someone else mess up his development? Surely time in a real NBA development system has to be worth more in speeding up the process. What’s the point of investing heavily in the G-league if it’s not to develop these types of players? I guess the counter could be that maybe we try and direct him to a Euro team whose development system we trust but I’m not sure if that’s how the process really works.
I agree with this in general, but Chomche is a special case, and is (IMO) just so ridiculously far from contributing. He needs to learn the game. Even with a year or two abroad, he's going to need development time. If you can send him somewhere you trust for a year of seasoning and physical maturity, you can treat next year as a true "first year." He's still so young, that he'll be the same age as most rookies next year.
If they're REALLY serious about it, maybe they assign someone from your staff to keep close tabs on him like we did with Jonas. And, if we are indeed planning to commit all these resources to help the kid develop, it makes sense if you can delay the clock starting on his first contract. Otherwise, the chances of getting any kind of production from him on his rookie contract are near zero.
I think we could follow the blueprint of Josh Huestis, even though he was a first round pick.
https://www.espn.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/69962/josh-huestis-first-stashed-domestic-pick
Our version version is the "international draft, and domestic stash"
https://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/josh-huestis-finally-gets-his-deal--as-thunder-sign-d-league-draft-and-stash-for-4-year-184238228.html?guccounter=1
So he gets signed a 2-way contract, spends the entire year in the G-Leauge, and then he signs his 4 year rookie contract, for the following year.
Maybe we can pull this off for 2 year, if he needs the time and hold off on starting his NBA clock.
We can structure the 905 around him.
He'll get a bunch of reps with our NBA guys, that could use a 905 assignment.
Run a lineup with Gradey, Ja'Kobe, Shead, Mogobo, Chomche, during a Raptors off nights. All of them get valuable experience with him, again, without start his NBA clock.
If we stash him in another league, that team gets to use him how they see fit, and maybe they don't use him.
The reason Jonas was stashed, was because he had 1 year left on his contract.

More likely we drop JFL and use his spot to move Chomche over.

And also he was playing in Lithuania where he had a key role on his team and they took his long term development even more seriously than we did, as he was also a rising star of their national program. Kind of the ideal stash scenario.

Chomche is raw by BAL league standards. I get the desire to bring him into the development pipeline, but I just think he's too far away to even start. Really curious to see how they handle this.

you think we give chomche JFL regular roster spot?
i am still leaning towards him being stashed. the logic being we traded for rights vs just signing him udfa.
we already signed our other rookies, why not him, he is in town.
we have open 2way roster spots.
we can sign him to a regular spot as well right now with no regards to JFL, can have up to 20 players signed in offseason.

PG/SG..team is pretty good.
If there's a open roster spot it's going to a flyer on a big.

This article has been on the board for over a week but hasn't really gotten much engagement. If you haven't read it, I would urge you to as it gives a lot of hints about how the team is likely to approach Chomche. It's also one of the best Raptors articles in a long time

For a number of reasons. Would be a good time to evaluate just how far away he is, along with his work ethic, coachability, etc. That could play into whether we stash, sign to two way or sign to full-time contract. Also, to evaluate JFL and how much we care to keep or lose him. Probably, not that big of a deal, but I thought he was a decent 15th man that with a little more jump shot could potentially be a 11th or 12th man.

Samson Folk and Blake Murphy seem to think he’s getting stashed overseas for a year.

What's the ration behind this? Chomche warming the bench on a competitive international team doesn't help him or us.

It's like I mentioned. Allows him to develop (physically and bball-wise) without burning cheap contract years in what is likely to be a very long development process.

Not every stash plays for a team as good as, say, Real Madrid. They can be stashed on a second division team.
There is a perfect prototype, ex-Raptor, for this: Matt Bonner
Bonner was selected with the 45th overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls but was then traded to the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors did not have a roster spot available at the time and asked Bonner to play overseas and hone his skills with a verbal promise to make the team the following season.
Bonner signed with Sicilia Messina of the Italian league in Messina, Sicily. Sicilia filed for bankruptcy in the middle of the season and stopped paying its players. Many players left the team but Bonner continued to play and finished the year averaging 19.2 points and 9.3 rebounds.

Apparently leaving Chomche for a year overseas is more favorable from a contract perspective and the Raptors future control of the player. Blake discussed the contract implications in the podcast with Samson. Its on YouTube.

I think what's most exciting about this kid is that he has some really elite tools in terms of movement at his size + quick twitch athleticism + natural basketball instinct especially on defence (if you watch his tape)
It's not that he sucks he's just SUPER RAW and very young
If he's a hard worker and takes advantage of the resources available to him now to get better definitely could be an exciting outcome in a couple yrs

He mentioned something about being an RFA after 2yrs on a 2way - can you sign a regular rookie contract after playing on a 2-way ?
