Probably no reason to bring back Doug. And he’ll probably want more than the “play every 5th night” role we can offer him?

Very interesting and looks like this was a best talent available grab since he had slid so far and must’ve fit enough to take on limited exposure. I don’t think he worked out for the Pacers.

Ouch was this worth 6.9 million ?

That’s more than I Jax, Nembhard, Sheppard, Walker, and Browns individual salaries for the upcoming season.

Well there goes the $4 million they got for moving from 40 to 47 last year.

I'd expect the team to give him a contract like Nembhard's but I don't expect much from him in 2024-25. He should spend a lot of time with the Ants.

From NBADraft.net

Strengths: Athletic, tough, and versatile wing … Can score in a variety of ways, including from beyond the 3 point arc – in his freshman season, over half of his field goal attempts come from three point range, where he converts at 35%… Does not need to be featured on offense to be effective … Goes after offensive rebounds, showing toughness on the boards … Has a smooth shooting stroke with a consistent and quick shooting motion … Team guy and solid decision maker … A quality free throw shooter (77%) who should be able to improve to being an 80+% FT shooter over time … Despite having good explosive ability, generally absorbs contact and finishes with crafty below-the-rim layups at the hoop rather than an explosive dunk … Should be able to learn to utilize his athleticism as he ages and gets stronger … Good soft touch around the hoop… Great size and skill set as a modern NBA wing … Turned 20 in December making him one of the younger prospects for this year’s NBA Draft …

Weaknesses: Seen as a development project and on top of that not a bigtime athlete … Has a good feel, but it’s apparent he’s still extremely raw and in need of time … At this point is more of a catch and shoot / finish player than someone who creates off the dribble… is a decent passer but has a ways to go in polishing his decision making … Can be a bit slow footed and / or upright on defense, needs to work on mechanics and focus … Has shown good leaping ability, off two feet but needs to improve in body control in order to utilize it to finish above the rim … Needs to add strength at just 22 lbs …Good height but lacks length … Lacks a huge wingspan, arms length appear to be just average and probably has a near equal or close to equal height to wingspan …

Notes: Earned All-Big 12 Honorable Mention and Big 12 All-Freshman Team in 2024… Reclassified to 2023 class… has a brother, Joe, and a sister, Holly. Joe is a professional Australian Football player, and Holly currently plays soccer at Santa Clara… His father, Richard, played Australian Football professionally, and his mother competed in diving at a national level… Johnny reportedly is also an excellent Australian Football and cricket player… Had a signature 17 point (6-7 from the field), 8 rebound outing in a Feb 3 blowout win over #4 ranked Houston …

From the Combine:

Johnny Furphy SF -
Height (Barefoot) 6' 7.50''
Weight: 188.8
Standing Reach: 8' 8.50''
Wingspan: 6' 8.00''
Lane Agility: 11.15
Shuttle: 3.17
3/4 Court Sprint: 3.20
Standing Vert: 25.5
Max Vert: 32.0

Comparison:

Furphy is taller than all our current wings. He is lighter than almost all of them as well. His Standing reach is the same as Jarace,... which puts him on the long side for a 2, a little over average for a 3, and undersized for a 4. His wingspan is only +.5" on his height,.. which is very low.

His Lane agility score is pretty good,... he seems to have good, short area body control. His Shuttle time is a little over average for a wing. So, his short area quickness & lateral movement are likely to be a bit slower than we could hope. His 3/4 court time is right about average for a wing. His standing vert & max vert are both below average for the NBA across all positions (and more specifically for wings.)

There was a report that paying triggered a limiting rule. Does the amount affect that?

Amount doesn’t matter. Just the fact that they paid ANY cash triggers a hard cap at the first apron, which is $7m+ over the luxury tax line, so for us, it’s REALLY not an issue.

This guy is a decent value pick look for him to get a deal like Nembhards. I don't expect him to play or make a contribution. I'd look sign Gordon Hayward to a smallish contract as back up to Nesmith.

I expect Furphy will get a standard contract but start the season with the Ants.

Huh???

A furphy is not slang for rumours. It's a tall story or a white lie.

How can you be Australian and get that so wrong?????

It's also a pretty decent beer.
