I really hate the notion you need a stretch 5 shooter to succeed because of a small margin. It absolutely blows that this team lost I-Hart because he wasn't a traditional stretch, but his court vision and IQ made up for it plenty. I am also exhausted with the KAT talk.
Knicks will be a weaker team with KAT at the 5 because now you're relying on OG and Bridges to get you rebound? That's such a terrible idea.

Dollar for dollar, KAT is not worth 49/53/57, and 61 per year just because he's a stretch 5. And if that shot is not falling, his impact in other areas is essentially null. He doesn't have the defensive impact KP has (are we really ignoring the 0 blocks against Dallas), doesn't have the passing abilities of a Jokic or I-Hart. I like the kid, but he's not worth Randle, Robinson, and whatever other pieces required.

3 way deal with NO might work.
Mitch to NO and Randle & Herb Jones + filler to Min.

Mitch / Randle / OG / Mikal / Brunson
vs.
KAT / OG / Mikal / Divo / Brunson

Its tough to make Wolves swallow Randle if he is UFA next year. Also we ran out of good assets.

Wouldn't that represent some cap relief for the wolves? Not that I think the rumor is real

Duren/Stewart/Reed?

Detroit trades with Knicks to get pick back?

I would love to bring Beef Stew back home...rochester NY kid and would fit right in.

I don't think we can match his 15 MM salary though. Not sure how much we can pay Precious in a S&T to even get close to matching that incoming salary.

No surprise. Hang up the phone on these crazy demands. Not sure why people think we can get him easily.

Yeah turn your attention to N.Richards. In the back of my brain i'm hoping something can be figured out to get Brook Lopez or maybe even Steven Adams but i understand the cap is in the way of either happening.

Not if Towns is essentially a salary dump for them due to not wanting the penalties of the new CBA. Naz is pretty good and they have two other guys making huge 40+M money in Goebert and Edwards.

NOP ain’t trading Herb for Mitch no way. If they did, I’d take him for ourselves and run. Dunno what I’d do after that tho but who cares lol

Randle at 45m
Or
Kat at 50m

That’s the question, ultimately

I doubt Minnesota makes a move but if it does happen it’ll be swift and sudden. Basically rn.

Because if we don’t resign Randle immediately we will be in a Paul George situation next summer where he walks for nothing or sign and trade for Pennies on the dollar.

I tried to explain this conundrum. And the Mikal trade kinda makes me suspicious that Randle is the odd man out however this shakes out

It would relieve their payroll this season. But if Randle asks a max/near max to re-sign, it would only postpone the problem.

Edit: to the trade to work, one or two Knick ex players would have to be sent to a third team.

Knicks destroying their championship window for KAnTer would be horrendous.

Bigs that are terrible defenders are losers. Plus he shot his team outta that mavs series. Kept letting em fly when he should have went inside to get it going. Just a dumb soft player.

Towns perhaps is a fake star. But he is not a bad player. Wolves would need a good reserve big 4/5 in the rotation to replace Towns. Gobert and Nax can not play 48 minutes a game.

thibs side:

he talked a ton about how in season trades make it hard to incorporate new guys, and how this was why he struggled fitting in bojan right away.

there is no way Leon and thibs will go into next year with the plan of trading Randle in the middle of the season. 0% because it literally will just waste everyone's season.

randle's side:

there is no way. 0 way. he will take anything other than the full max. it's not obvious to me if he is eligible for the 35% super max, but whatever happens, he isn't gonna save us money. why?

1/ because he felt that he already gave us a break on the first contract
2/ he looks at Franz Wagner, way younger than him, and way worse, get 220m
3/ PG at 35 years old got 210m
4/ just like the PG situation, if the knicks aren't willing to give him the max, you can be sure that someone else will. and he'll demand a trade to that team.

knicks side:
if we dont extend him now, it means we're not going to offer him a max contract and he's going to FA. that also means right now he's got trade value. we've already ruled out any plan for in-season trade.
if he gets to FA, he has effective 0 value.
the only reason I can see us with a plan of letting him walk for nothing is because we have no bad contracts. but we just traded away all of our extra picks, so even if we thought about "well, just let his salary roll off" we are just going to replace Randle's cap space with guys we already have on the team.

so I'd say:

92% we are prepared to offer him the max before the season starts
6% we have some backchannel comms going on for KAT
2% some bull dark horse guy like sengun.

the real factor is the knicks will obviously submit an extension offer to Randle...the concern would be if he doesn't take it going into the season with a lack of control over his future would be concerning. The knicks aren't in a cap situation to be losing a player for nothing like they did with ihart this offseason.

randle should take it.

but

there are rules about the supermax and all-nba which may entice him to wait. It's not obvious to me if he qualifies, I looked into it last year and *I THINK* if randle makes all-nba next year he will become eligible for a 35% supermax. otherwise 30%.
