Ayton to Chicago
CHI trades: Nikola Vucevic, Lonzo Ball, 2025 POR 1st (1-14 protected thru 2028, otherwise 2028 2nd)
POR trades: Deandre Ayton, Matisse Thybulle
Chicago trades for younger players with a better chance of being in their rotation 2 years from now, including a Caruso replacement. Portland moves off of gtd. money and grabs a center who might be more tradeable if/when Clingan and Williams are ready for minutes.
My real sell is that this feels like a deal Chicago historically would consider. I think the value is probably close, though I would not do it were I them.

Re: Ayton to Chicago
Hard no for POR.
Ball may never play again and eating his salary, and paying Vooch starter money for backup play is a no go for POR.
This would a minimum of PORs pick coming back to start talks.

Ball is expiring so Portland is going to save a significant amount of money, but I could maybe see Chicago being amenable to including that pick since it is likely to convey as 2nd(s)?

That would be enough to start talks.
I think Vooch would be a better mentor than Ayton. Not saying either team should make this trade.

Re: Ayton to Chicago
With the roster PORT has with one full lineup of kids and one full veteran lineup I have no clue what they're thinking. If you think PORT writes Clingan down in ink as the starter the trade makes no sense. If PORT thinks like me and the rookie is going to get in foul trouble virtually every game for the first half of the season trying to block every shot I'd want to start Vucevic and have the kid learn how to be patient in making plays.
What I don't get is why PORT would have any interest except as an expiring deal, if they even have room for Lonzo. They probably have 6 guards that are healthy and should or need to play, to just have Ball sit, even if healthy is strange on a good day.
Here are the Bulls making a deal with the only team that has any use for that protected pick, yeah you push it into the pot. Even taking Thybulle when Lavine is still around just bloats the backcourt.

Portland is owed something here.

The Bulls should include Portland's '25 pick back. I'm still not sure Portland makes the trade, but it would be solid for the Bulls.

Yeah, I mean, much better to pay Ayton 150% of what Vuc makes to...also play like a backup.

Lol.
For all his warts, Ayton is a starter.

Vuc has started every game he's played in since his rookie year. Their stat lines are very similar. Not really sure why one would be considered a "starter" and the other a "backup"

Maybe I was harsher on Vooch than I should have been.
I do like him as a vet mentor in POR but not as a starter. Too poor defensively.

I think Portland is owed their 1st back. That would get it done for me.

Edited to include Portland's protected pick returned.

Re: Ayton to Chicago
I don't like Ayton, but I do feel like this would be in line with the other moves the Bulls have been making this summer.
It's really long-term financial savings for Portland
Continuation of getting younger for Chicago
I would not include the PDX 1st, even if I anticipate it being eventually two 2nds. The future cap savings are benefit enough for Portland and I'm not in any actual hurry to add Ayton.

No worries, totally understand but that is a deal killer for POR.

would do it however

The Bulls are getting off of Vuc and Ball, and Ayton is better than Vuc.
