James won the poll with a plurality of votes cast with five. Stephen Curry, Anthony Edwards and Jrue Holiday each received two votes. Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard and Bam Adebayo each received one vote.
The participants this time were most of the players and coaches from the select team — a collection of younger NBA players, G Leaguers and Flagg, brought to Las Vegas for three days of scrimmages against the Olympic team.
Best player at training camp at 39.5 years old for a team stacked to the brim with legends. LeBron's work ethic is somehow slept on, never gets talked about the way it is with Kobe/Jordan.

I don’t think this is correct because on the general board it was confirmed that he has washed up and dragging the team down and trying to hog attention and doesn’t belong on the team

I’d love to know who gave Bam a vote for best player lol.

Safest guess is Jaime Jaquez Jr (was on the select team). But also my understanding is that the vote was for who the best player in their training camp was, not general opinion on who the best player is. Quite possible Bam (and Jrue, who received two votes) played really well (I didn't watch the scrimmage footage).

Lebron should definitely retire after being the best player on a team of all-NBAers.

Age 39+ LeBron having played the most minutes in NBA history had a season which he finished in the top 15 of both EPM and noisy single season NPI RAPM. People don’t understand how crazy this is. At this age and wear and tear, he should be a bench symbolic figure, not a top impact player.
https://dunksandthrees.com/epm
https://psteve.shinyapps.io/RAPM/
2024 EPM Rank, NPI RAPM Rank
1. Joel Embiid (22)
2. SGA (2)
3. Luka Dončić (16)
4. Giannis Antetokounmpo (14)
5. Nikola Jokić (1)
6. Jalen Brunson (4)
7. LeBron James (13)
8. Paul George (3)
9. Kawhi Leonard (11)
10. Donovan Mitchell (17)
11. Tyrese Haliburton (22)
12. Stephen Curry (87)
13. Devin Booker (55)
14. Isaiah Hartenstein (6)
15. Jayson Tatum (30)
18. AD (75)
22. Edwards (29)
25. KD (65)
Only 8 players finished top 15 in both. He was supposed to fall off a long time ago after his athleticism faded, and his athleticism has certainly faded a great deal and yet he continues to add to his game to adjust for a league that is completely an utterly different than the one that he entered as an 18 year old.
You often hear certain posters use the term “longevity” as a pejorative, i.e., “ I don’t really care about longevity,” “that’s just a longevity stat,” “It doesn’t matter how long somebody plays—Ionly care about peak/prime play,” etc., but you have to put longevity into perspective.
Here you have a player who is playing in a completely different league than when he started and this league values the skills he supposedly did not have and yet he is still a top 10 player and if you include the playoffs more like a top five-ish player because he was able to add/adjust/modify his game.
While other players are given the benefit of the doubt that they would be able to adjust their games or that they have “portability,” etc., here you have a player who has actually done so and has won and has been a top impact player and every single type of playing environment with every single type of teammates, yet he is the one who is “not portable,” “needs shooting/spacing,” etc., when other players, including players many posters cherish, Who are not able to adjust their games to provide impact in different league environments.

I read that “all facts” comment and thought, “Oh, did the OP just post a bunch of egregiously cherrypicked but technically true data?”
Nope.

Ha...I took a break from all things basketball a few years back. I missed the takes from the sanity of the Lebron James forum, though, so I logged back in and mistakenly went to the General Board. Haven't been back since. Different opinions are fine ONLY when those opinions are well reasoned. That place is a cesspool of irrational hate and nothing else. Reason and rational discourse are simply absent from most of it. My biggest wonder has always been why the hate for a guy that has aboslutely no power over their lives. None. Oh, I know, like children some of them hate on Lebron because they hate his fans, but that is really **** up. It really is interesting from a sociological and anthropological angle, though. But, sometimes you just want to talk basketball...And objectively, from any way you slice it, Lebron is one of the best ever.

Great points about the meaningfulness of LeBron's "longevity," homecourtloss! He has adapted to a revolutionized game without compromising his identity as a player one bit and without losing any of his effectiveness. Witness 2009 vs. 2017 LeBron and see a player in two starkly different circumstances imposing his singular will on the game to masterful effect.
We don't get into this side of fandom much around here, but it's actually inspiring to me that somebody can sustain their commitment to greatness, and succeed beyond the wildest expectations, for 20 years of grueling work. Few manage that level of productivity and excellence over that long in any field whatsoever. Professional athletes are often reduced to "playing a game for money," but in most cases the drive and effort it takes to make and stay in pro sports is insane. But to escalate that and maintain performance at the absolute zenith of athletics, staying there for 20 years, is unreal.
Since Brady was brought up earlier, it's so interesting that in a sport where careers are typically short and peaks emphasized that much more, Brady's incredible late-career body of work was all considered accretive on his GOAT legacy. LeBron deserves the same (or more) consideration.

GB is a flaming pile of dung by design.
The global mod does not moderate the GB.
The global mod is a good mod, which is separate from their opinion they are entitled to have on a board they don't moderate. I know that's confusing because I think people assume they do moderate it.

I agree, and I think it's a major flaw of RealGM.
I know it's annoying when people bring their "General Board level" takes to the Player Comparisons board, but I think it's worse that player comparison threads are allowed to proliferate on the General NBA board. Such threads are awful almost without exception, and their toxic arguments dominate the General Board.
I feel like if all player comparison discussions were redirected here, the culture of this board would have a positive effect on the quality of the threads. And then the General Board could be reserved for news, game threads, assfault, etc.

Not everyone wants to have a high level discussion about basketball. People take it seriously to different levels and like to discuss things at different levels of intellect. Even who the GOAT is.
It wouldn't be fair if we decided the intellectual discussion was boring and kicked the player comparison board off. It's not fair to do that with less intellectual discussion.
Trying to cater to many levels of intellect here. Keeping it on GB elevates the discussion in this board. Would you prefer that to change?
