Challenge: Unite Trae Young and Lauri in Utah
It's a completely 180º move from Utah but it could be interesting. Jazz was one of the few teams interested in Young (and I guess he would be the target if they could have traded for Mikal Bridges).
So, considering Jazz keeps R&E Lauri, how to make a trade for Young?
My best guess is:
to Spurs: picks from Utah
to Hawks: Their picks back from Spurs + picks from Jazz
to Jazz: Trae Young
It only makes sense if Jazz can offer better picks to Spurs than the Hawks ones.
Any thoughts?

That's the point: they can't. End of thread.

We just went through Brooklyn/Houston fans fighting over how valuable/mediocre their picks were and how neither side would cave with ridiculous valuations.. and then they did… And Atlanta has a better roster than Brooklyn and can easily add to it..
2027 LAL, 2029 Cleveland to SAS
2025 Atlanta and 2026 swap rights back to Atl
Maybe send Taylor Hendricks to be a really exciting potential fit with Victor instead of one of the firsts?

Not sure. Jazz can offer best of 26, best of 27, best of 28, and best of 29 picks (between CLE, MIN, UTA). The odds of one of these picks being top 5 are significant. If Trae stays in ATL, 2025 pick won't be top 5, and if they add another player (Ingram, Kuzma...) maybe it will be out of the lottery.
It is a gamble. The affirmative "they can't" is not accurate.

Re: Challenge: Unite Trae Young and Lauri in Utah
straight 1 and 1 team trade to tough, even a third team with picks is hard.
Let the Jazz send out John Collins and Jordan Clarkson to the Bulls
Zach Lavine heads to ATL
Trae heads to UT
If ATL needs picks figure out what UT can send them
Bulls have no picks to send if they wanted to they take the 2 veterans one of which ATL had to give UT room for Trae
ATL even if they're tanking to the lottery Zach has shown that he's entertaining for a losing team
UT gets their guy to pair with Lauri

There is no incentive for Atlanta to tank for the next 3 seasons though.ChettheJet wrote:straight 1 and 1 team trade to tough, even a third team with picks is hard.

Except if they do this deal to move Trae, then their roster won't be much better than Brooklyn without Mikal and they'd be presumably committing to a tank. So the deal itself makes the ATL picks more valuable and the price pretty much the same as for Brooklyn.
The Nets gave up 2 unprotected firsts and 2 swaps to extinguish a swap and get an unprotected first back. I assume the Hawks would want back '25, '26 swap, and '27 if they're going full tank.
With that framework, it could be something like 4 unprotected 1sts and 2 swaps - with the main problem being the two best looking picks the Jazz have after this deal are protected ('27 Lakers is 1-4 & '29 MIN is 1-5). Either way, that's a lot for the Jazz to give up and assumes that the Hawks would be content just getting their 2 picks and swap back when trading one of their franchise's best players. Feels like they'd want at least another 2 first round picks. Would the Jazz drop 6 first round picks and 2 swaps for Trae?
I think it's feasible if the 2026 draft looks really good but it doesn't really match up with Danny Ainge's history.

While I do think a deal could be struck, what you offered isn't close. The only 2025 pick the Jazz have that's competitive with ATL25 is UTH25. Even that is ignoring the Jazz getting Young. This is true off all "war chest" teams. It's going to be hard to truly make a competitive star package with just other teams' picks. They have to be willing to risk their unprotected natural picks as well. That's the biggest reason why we don't see war chests converted to star players via trades very often. I can only think of Irving to Boston, and that was a very different trade market.

Yeah, if you take out Trae and replace him with nothing at all - they have similar rosters?
Houston/NY and Brooklyn did their trades about the same time, right?
And no. I think Atlanta probably feels like they only need a 1-2 year tank. They have Dyson, Zac, and Jalen as interesting talented youth. Add two high lottery picks and whatever other assets they have (LAL pick and Trae’s value)
So I’d assume it’s very similar to the Houston trade. And Utah can pay for it using their 2029 firsts. And then Atlanta can get the 2027 firsts for Trae. Or similar.
Think my offer was a bit short then, but if Atlanta is keeping Trae and building a play-in team, maybe SAS shouldn’t demand as much as Houston did. Houston pretty much knew they were getting a lottery pick from Brooklyn.. SAS doesn’t really know that.
Sort of double edge. But more than two protected firsts.

I don't see the Spurs going much lower on their demand than the Nets or having a return with all of the assets pushed to '29 or later. That said, there's like 1,000 versions of this trade that could be made because of how many picks Utah and San Antonio have. I don't doubt that something could work.
I'd be interested in the Hawks fans' views on what they think it'd take to move Trae because that also informs what Utah could use to get the Hawks picks back.

I'm not sure if I can fully express how much I loathe the idea of Utah trading for Trae. I have no problem with anyone disagreeing, but he's just not a player I would want on the team at all.

I agree, what is the upside of a Trae & Lauri Jazz team? Maybe a 4-7th seed in the west, more likely 7-10th seed. It's just a really bad low upside move.
I don't understand some of the Jazz fans pathological disdain of rebuilding. It's not like we have won anything in significant in 25 years. Rebuilding is a healthy process, not some type of boogeyman the way some Jazz fans treat it.

I just don't see why we'd want to do this. Not only would we trade picks for Young, we'd lose pur pick on 2025 and 2026, so it is those picks and one extra. For what? The ceiling of a first round exit?
