It would have taken a complete disaster of a season for Brunson to not be able to get 40m a year in FA next season. He probably would need to get back to the numbers he was putting up in Dallas for that to happen.

If it's in writing there's a problem. That's what happened with Smith. The league unearthed written agreements. The Wolves wouldn't have been in trouble over a verbal understanding.

I get why he did it and I can't say it was a dumb move. Still if I was his agent I'd probably advise against it. Basically he locked guaranteed money. And since he is 28 y/o I can't say it was dumb. Basically it the Pippen move and Pippen ended up regretting signing that contract the rest of his life. I hope the same doesn't end up happening to Brunson. Yes he locked in guaranteed money, of course the downside is if he would of kept up his production he would of probably made twice as much . Or who knows with free agency and a new TV deal maybe three times as much.

Brunson is a good dude and had a great year last year but anytime I see a player sign a contract like this it tells me they aren't confident in themselves. If he would of waited 3 years and kept up his production he would of made twice as much if not more.

I'm sure most people have Isaiah Thomas in mind when they sign these type of contracts.

But at the end of the day I'll say its a good move. He's young enough to where if he stay at his current level he'll be able to sign another big contract before the end of his career. Also he is in New York, so he will have plenty of endorsement opportunities. Locking in 156 million is pretty good.

I'm curious if cap guru types can weigh in on what this actually means from a team building perspective. Props to Brunson for taking a bit less to stay where he wants to be. I do think there's value in being viewed as a good vs a bad contract. That seems incongruous, but I do think it builds goodwill vs the other way around where fans think you're overpaid and things turn toxic. However, at a team building level what does this actually do? The Knicks have other folks to pay so they won't likely have cash for a big fish free agent. Does this keep them under the dreaded 2nd apron so they have all their options open to them rather than having restrictions?

Again, I think it can be positive for the player even on the court for their contract to be viewed favorably by the fans, but it all this does is save the Knicks ownership in luxury tax payments is that really something that fans or players should concern themselves with?
