Words mean nothing. Harden was obviously promised and he didn't get anything. If Brunson sucks in 2027, and he still gets the bag then we might have a Wolves situation, or if we have something in writing, which is unlikely
It would need to be in writing. Smith's arrangement was.
Say Brunson wins the chip, turns into a pumpkin, and still gets the Big Bag. Unless there's a paper agreement there's still not a there there.
They took draft picks away for deals being announced 5 mins away from the start of the free agency. There was nothing in writing there. It doesn't have to be a Wolves like punishment, but the league set a precedent. If he wins a chip we have the Kobe precedent, where a team takes care of it's legends, but what if he sucks for the next 3 years and still gets the bag. 2-3 second rounders? 1 first round?
I am not sure if there is even a deal there anyway
No, it was for a series of lower one-year deals that allowed Minny to acquire Smith's Bird rights and sign him to the bigger contract.

This would allow Minnesota to acquire his bird rights and eventually go over the salary cap to sign him to a lucrative deal. Unfortunately for Smith and Mennesota, the NBA found out ahead of the 2000 offseason and handed down severe penalties to all involved.
https://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/01/nba-joe-smith-illegal-contract-timberwolvesAccording to J.A. Adande, then of the Los Angeles Times, the entire plan was blown open when agents Eric Fleisher and Andrew Miller parted ways. Miller retained Smith and superstar teammate Kevin Garnett in the split, which prompted a lawsuit that led to the unearthing of many documents, including those detailing the Timberwolves’ illegal agreement with Smith.
This was all agreed to in writing beforehand and that's why they got in trouble when Smith was signing his big deal.
If the Knicks did this, they could get in a lot of trouble. If it's just a discussion of what could happen there's no there there. Also, notably different from Smith, Brunson actually signed the highest extension available to him
at this time. The more lucrative extension was only available prior to next season.
