[Woj] Philly re-signs Martin 2/16

Post#1 » by Godaddycurse » Sat Jul 13, 2024 1:39 am

would be funny if he and okogie are traded for one another. Is there something special about 8M as the balloon contract?

Nothing special, feels like they picked that number specifically because its moveable.

Smart move to lock up a tradeable salary especially if you have picks to attach. Less so for PHX with Okogie not having draft capital to trade.

I would have assumed Philly would have gone with a higher number on Marting to create more flexibility. They currently sit $2.2ish MM below the first apron with 11 players on the roster, so they will likely be a 2nd apron team, and they have about $13MM below with a need to fill 3 roster spots. So they could have gone to $13-15MM creating a larger trade chip and still had enough room to round out the roster with vets and mins

Why would they go over the second apron given where they are ?

Yeah, I really thought he’d get as close to the MLE as possible (without approaching the second apron)..

Feel like they could’ve gone to 12 mil here and had an easier time matching in a midseason deal.

They wouldn't.

They are $13MM below the 2nd apron after signing Martin. They could have added $6MM to Martin's deal while retaining enough room below the 2nd apron to round out the roster with 3 vet minimum salaries. You probably would want to create a little more cushion, but it still would have created more trade flexibility.

Philly is better positioned in terms of tradable draft picks than most contenders.

Yea I understand not going the full $15 mil for him, but I think they should've at least gone $12, which would've left room for one more vet min later in the season if needed. $8 mil doesn't leave many options open.
2025-2026 Philadelphia 76ers:

Maxey/McCain/Lowry
Grimes/Edgecombe/Gordon
Oubre/Edwards
George/Watford/Walker
Embiid/Bona/Drummond/Broome

One benefit of doing a smaller deal 8M is it's easier to make a trade happen if the other team is over the 1st apron and cant take back over 100%.

Ie Philly wants a player making 11M

They can trade Martin + 2 vet min (directed to 3rd team) for said player. If martin made 12M then its much harder to complete said trade

Seems pretty clear they want Niang back.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

Philly doesn’t have enough room under the 1st apron to take back that salary.

they are still sending out over what that incoming player makes, they dont need to be under 1st apron

Tyrese Maxey / Kyle Lowry / Jared McCain
Caleb Martin / Eric Gordon
Kelly Oubre / Ricky Council IV
Paul George / Kenyon Martin Jr.
Joel Embiid / Andre Drummond / Adem Bona

I hope they can bring Covington back who can help backup the four spot as well.

Going up to 13 million for KJ Martin on the chance there is someone available at the deadline would have been a reckless and unnecessary chance to take to go over the 2nd apron. Being just over the 1st apron, they can just combine salary to get what they need.
The 76ers are already at about 179 million with the signing of KJ and they still have at least two more roster spots to fill just to have 13 players.
