Teams that still need to salary dump

Post#1 » by HadAnEffectHere » Sat Jul 13, 2024 1:51 pm

The Jazz, Pistons, Grizzlies, and Nets all have either cap space left or a large TPE (the Hawks also probably have a large TPE, but no interest in using it as it would push them into the tax). The Grizzlies are probably not interested in salary dumps but other teams probably are. The Clippers are rumored to be dumping Westbrook to the Jazz in the Kris Dunn sign and trade. Otherwise... Is there any team that seems like it would be interested in salary dumps?

Teams with financial issues for reference

2nd apron teams: Suns, Timberwolves, Celtics, Bucks (Celtics and Bucks less than 10m over)
Not in 2nd apron but are in 1st apron teams: Lakers, Heat, Nuggets, 76ers
Not in 1st apron, but are in tax teams: Warriors, Mavs, Clippers

From Spotrac which is constantly updating and may have some figures wrong as deals update and change.

Many teams are also hard-capped under the 1st apron and thus may need to dump salary to a third team to execute a deal that could add significant salary.

CLT a bad idea?

Micic and Richards for Russell.

Warriors are about $5 mil over the tax line, I’d bet we’re looking to dump some salary

I think GP2 and Looney stay on the roster until the trade deadline to be used as salary filler for a Markkanen etc trade and if nothing comes up, they get dumped at the deadline.

My rankings are:

Probably won't salary dump: Suns

Can't really salary dump due to every player being too important or cheap: Celtics, 76ers

Probably will salary dump unless a great trade comes up: Clippers (PJ Tucker), Warriors (Looney or GP2)

Can't salary dump as it's too politically fraught: Timberwolves (ownership dispute), Lakers (LeBron paycut), Bucks (Team is going backwards already and Giannis may want out if they salary dump)

Could salary dump, but not all the way out of the tax without a significant trade that moved MPJ or Murray for a guy that makes less money: Nuggets (Zeke Nnaji)

Could salary dump, but don't have a great feel either way: Mavs (Kleber), Heat (Duncan Robinson)

Yeah I think the first option would be to use the salary fluff for a difference maker and for the right guy(Lauri?) they pay the tax no problem. Without finding that deal, yeah get out of the tax for sure. And they will.

As much a question as a statement, but I thought under the new CBA that your salary when the season starts is your salary for tax and floor purposes. In fact, I thought space below the salary floor was treated as a use it or lose it proposition before the season starts.

It’s a risk for both teams, but is Wiggins ever going to get his playoff mojo back? Pistons would happily give up Hardaway Jr for him. Expiring deal for the Warriors and save cap space $ this year. Pistons hoping Wiggins returns to form and slots in at SF.

Pistons could give $3M in relief with a THJr for Duncan Robinson trade.

Wiggins averaged 16.7 and 7.5 on .544 TS% and .333 3P% the year everyone thought he was a max contract star in the playoffs. If he gets his playoff mojo back he will be a lot like 2023-24 regular season Wiggins, just on more minutes.

That would be interesting, though I’d imagine the Pistons would ask for draft capital that might cause the Warriors to pass. Straight up, it’s pretty tempting

You have to be at the salary floor by opening night, or it’s penalized against the cap for the team, yes. There’s still some questions as to loopholes of something like waiving a non guaranteed THT would drop you below the cap floor, but then immediately going back over in a move. Etc.

Think it was a response to the guy that thought gsw would hold onto them til deadline if they doesnt find anything now, and dump them then if they cant find anything at the time. Basicly thats old cba, u cant do moves to dodge stuff at deadline anymore

Suns aren't worried. Either they win next season, and pay the tax. Or they lose and they move Booker or KD to another team and reload with picks and younger players. Possibly HOU for all our picks back along with Sengun, Amen and filler (Brooks).

Detroit is not touching Wiggins.

A much more realistic idea would be GPII and those 2 Atlanta 2nds for Wendell Moore.

Luxury tax is calculated with taxable salary as of the team's last regular season game, so you can shed some salary during the year if you need to lower your tax bill.

You still can in regards to the tax, but not in regards to the salary floor. Actual cash paid over the season by the team counts toward the salary floor. GS cut luxury tax penalties last year by dumping Cory Joseph’s contract on the Pacers at the deadline.
