Will Ohman traded! ...for Jose Ascanio

Post#1 » by Howling Mad » Tue Dec 4, 2007 3:23 pm

Bruce Levine is reporting Ohman was traded to the Braves along with Omar Infante. Thank God. We got a minor league pitcher with decent strikeout numbers.

EDIT JOSE ASCANIO

The guy we got, I think his name is Jose Escanteio. Hes 22 years old and Levine said he could potentially walk into our bullpen and play a major role.

Oh yea, he throws a consistent 95 mph, and the Braves have primed him to be a closer.

Hmmmm....

GREAT deal.

He just had a good year in AA. Don't think we need him in the pen on opening day, we have solid depth. But a pretty valuable relief prospect.

The fact that we cleared $4 million and got a decent prospect for two guys who I would've cut is just excellent.

Plus, before this deal our roster was full and we still haven't signed Prior. Now we have a spot for him.

All the radio stations in Chi are talking about how great this deal is. Everybody hated Ohman, he was the one guy I have consistently booed for the past few years. I love how we get rid of a weakness in Ohman, and strengthen our farm pen with Ascanio.

This guy has consistently had a 1:1 ratio on innings/SOs. I'd love for him to come on mid way through the season and play the Marmol-sure out-role for us.

Aslo note that this guy came from the Braves farm system. I love knowing that. Hes a minor league vet and looks to be ready to step in, from everything I've read. I do agree we can't rely on someone like him, but he could potentially be one of the young guys succeeding, an ingredient for all World Series' teams.

From the trib:

Ascanio, a 22-year-old flamer-throwing right-hander, spent part of last season in the Braves bullpen where he compiled a 1-1 record and 5.06 ERA. In 16 innings, he struck out 13.

Skipping Triple-A, Ascanio was 2-2 with a 2.54 ERA and 10 saves with Class AA Mississippi. He struck out 71 and walked only 18 in 78 innings. One of his appearances was as a starter.

Move sounds ok - Clears roster spots Will Ohman and Omar Infante were not going to be major players us anyway.

First time I remember the trib calling someone a flamer?

From what they wrote it sounds like Ascanio is a 22 year old, right handed person who can throw homosexuals.

Nice, we traded two scrubs for someone who could be potentially very good.
