I looked at Spotrac, and Garza technically has the ability to veto any trade. I think this is due to the contract structure. I saw this tweet from two years ago, but I believe the application of the rules might be the same in this instance.

He will have the right to veto being traded this season since a trade would revert his Bird rights to Non Bird.

Is this the same reasoning here?

Correct. This is the de facto no trade clause. If a player accepts a one year deal and played for the previous team, a trade would cost him his Bird rights and reduce the number of teams that might offer him a good deal the following year, so that’s why the rule is in place. Look up D’Lo and the Lakers for more discussion.

Yes. The Lakers and D'Lo did an interesting thing last year where they waived D'Lo's No-Trade Clause but gave D'Lo a Player Option.

A team can ask a player to waive that clause at time of signing, and it happens a lot, especially with minimum and lower paid players where they don't have a whole lot of options.

With his bird rights though, if he blew up next year, we could pay him up to the MLE without using any exceptions, even if over the 2nd apron.

Watching Summer League is exciting as we dream about a young player’s potential, but Garza is a good addition to the team, where the bigs need to be able to shoot. His interviews are always solid, he knows what he has to do, and I like that he appreciates his spot on the Timberwolves. He’s still an end of the bench player, but having a good guy who knows his role on and off the court isn’t a bad investment of a roster slot.

I could see Garza being a college commentator after his career is over, a la Robbie Hummel. Ant will be the new Charles Barkley.

I'm glad we got him and when called upon I expect he can carry his weight.

Luka Garza looks shredded!

In the last eight years, I never once thought I’d write that sentence.

He looks like he's been following around Naz for 3 years.

In order to get consistent playing time, Garza must be able to shoot threes consistently. Swing factor is passing though, or at least solid DHO game. These two skills are crucial for five out big.

ESPN has Luka down to 233 pounds (and Naz 240). I question whether either can really bang with big centers any more.

The only players heavier than Naz are Gobert (257) and Randle (253).

Yes and no. It's not always about weight and strength.

Chicago attacked Luka relentlessly late in the game. It worked for them every time.
