SAS/MEM - Kennard

Post#1 » by HornetJail » Fri Jul 19, 2024 3:21 pm

Spurs trade Zach Collins, 2025 CHA "1st" lotto prot (won't convey, so it becomes CHA 2026, 2027 2nds), 2025 CHI 2nd
Memphis trades Luke Kennard (S&T up to 3/36M with player option), Brandon Clarke

Spurs trade 2nds and a bit of future cap space to add a shooter and an energy big to their rotation
Memphis commits to their younger core, as well as adding an extra big man for depth. They get 3 2nds in the next few drafts as well.
Kennard agrees to go to SA where he gets both a bigger role and tons of open looks with Wemby's gravity and CP3's passing ability. No-brainer move for Kennard, who essentially makes full MLE money, which seems somewhat unlikely in this market otherwise.

Spurs: CP3/Kennard/Vassell/Barnes/Wemby + Jones/Castle/Sochan/Clarke/FA big
Grizz: Ja/Smart/Bane/JJJ/Edey? + Rose/Konchar/Vince/GG/Collins?

Grizz hard pass. Kennard adds shooting to our lineup and BC is our third big.

I mean if Memphis is willing to spend the money, they just keep Kennard right? Collins in theory is the big every team wants, but he's never actually been that guy and while he was healthier than Clarke last year he's just as much of an injury concern.

Easy deal for the Spurs, but don't really get it for Memphis.

If the idea is Memphis does this and then dumps Ziaire to duck the tax, I get it for Memphis and seems pretty fair. Early 2nds are nice to have for teams on verge of the tax... Cheap trade capital, or finding steals in draft..

If not, you just dump Ziaire and keep Luke and spend the same amount of tax..

SAS should do it though. Don’t love starting Vassell and Luke, but there’s plenty of minutes to play around with it.

This is basically downgrading bigs, losing Kennard, and entering the tax for a couple of 2nds, I don't think that is a path we would choose. I think Memphis at this point in the offseason plan is to still resign Kennard while staying out of the tax. It seems like we have a standing offer with him but might require us to dump either Zaire or Rose to clear enough room under the tax to sign him.

Looks too good for San Antonio. Collins has never lived up to the hype he flashed in college, Grizz are better off with Clarke & Luke
