Grant to Golden State

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Fri Jul 19, 2024 7:53 pm

GSW trade: Andrew Wiggins, Moses Moody, 2025 GSW 1st (1-5, 1-5, unprotected)
POR trades: Jerami Grant, Duop Reath, 2nd(s)?

I think this is a simple, high-upside trade for Portland where they get a pick with a reasonable chance of being late-lottery in a draft that front offices have been excited about for 3 years (two years ago Cooper Flag was demolishing the Thompson twins scrimmaging vs. OTE, and there are other great looking prospects, too). Golden State moves off of Wiggins' contract for a guy who can better-imitate a second option while still having some powder dry and matching salary should someone else come available. Come 2026 they'll have all their future picks available again as long as their pick conveys (which I imagine it does .... this should keep them as a play-in level team).

EDIT: Golden State is hard capped at the first apron, so had to include Moody and Reath.

Can GSW trade their 2025 FRP?

I would do this for POR if the pick can be included and if Wiggins could be routed elsewhere.

I was hoping and expecting this to be one of the first replies. You did not disappoint. Jroy have it all.

The 2024 1st has conveyed and they only owe the protected 2030 1st.

IMO, the incentive is enough that Wiggins should just be Portland's problem to try and move. In a new context with a larger role his volume stats might increase his value, too. Obviously if a third team can be found to take Wiggins I think it makes everything smoother, but tried to keep it as simple as possible!

Agree with JRoy that Wiggins should be routed elsewhere.

Not sure that Golden State should pay a first to maybe or maybe not upgrade Wiggins to Grant. Jerami is (usually) a better all-around player, but he isn't so much better that he vaults the Warriors any higher in the standings, IMO. Eh, if they can't do any better, I suppose he's a fit.

This is where I'm at, and frankly, is the problem with moving Grant or Ayton for picks. Grant isn't a much better player than Wiggins. Ayton isn't better than Ingram period (and I'm higher on Ayton than a majority of the board).

Contending teams don't really have bad money to send out and no one is parting with a first for a quasi lateral move. If Portland isn't willing to accept future cap relief as a substantial portion of the value offered, those two might be finishing their contracts with the Blazers.

This! Grant isn’t really much of an upgrade if at all. He doesn’t really play sf and wouldn’t be good to guard any guards if needed. No way would we add moody and a 1st for what is likely a lateral if not worse fitting player.

Add Simons to Grant and Ayton, too. I suspect Portland management understands this, but a lot of Blazers fans are having trouble accepting this as a possible outcome. Matching salaries means other teams have to send minutes-getters out in any deal, which reduces the deal to whatever upgrade the Portland dudes represent over the incumbents. Hard to find many such upgrades that merit spending draft capital.

Yeah, Grant’s not enough of an answer at his contract to add a lightly protected first rounder into the deal

Agree with the consensus here -- Grant is better than Wiggins, but he's not better enough to justify giving up a first-round pick to make the swap (and Moody, even if I'm the only GS fan who still thinks he's going to be good someday)

Yeah it's tough. In a vacuum, these are all good players who could play important roles on a good team (well, maybe not Ayton, but Simons and Grant definitely). But they each make too much for a team to cobble together some odds & ends for them, and most teams don't have a $20M guy to give up without losing part of their rotation.

The Warriors aren't looking to trade Wiggins unless it's a clear upgrade. He's an important part of their defense, and his contract isn't that troublesome.

Easy yes for Portland. In could see Grant doing really well on the Warriors given their 3-ball ways, Curry’s gravity to help him get open, and the Warriors looking for a new 3 point shooter with the loss of Klay. Reath also could benefit as a 3 point shooting big.

Subtract all picks and I think there's a discussion here.

I hadn't considered that, but you might be right. Portland shaves a year and substantial dollars off Grant's contract, earns goodwill sending two solid players to a better situation, and gives Moody an audition. Golden States gets a modest upgrade without losing any picks. Portland would probably rather keep Grant, but it's worth a thought.

Send Wiggins to Atlanta for Capela. Getting a veteran center to work with Clingan and allow Ayton to be moved.

If we don't trade Jerami Grant now, there will be plenty of interest at the deadline and next summer. Jerami Grant is versatile and fits well in various situations, making him an asset. Andrew Wiggins turns into one of the worst contracts in the league when he's not in the right role or mindset, and he looks particularly bad when on a struggling team.

With the pick, I'd probably make the trade, but without it—oh hell no

Why would Atlanta want Wiggins???
Capela is expiring.
Hawks already have 1 underachieving SF paid too much, don't need another making even more.

Portland could trade Ayton today if he has any value. Sign some vet min center and still have Reath and Timelord on the roster..

I would think Atlanta’s offer for Wiggins would be Hunter and Nance for Wiggins and whatever small contract..

After drafting a forward, I’m not sure if there’s much interest in either Grant or Wiggins, but I think Atlanta would just pay to turn Hunter into Grant and cut out GSW..
