The LaVine & Kessler to LAL deal

Post#1 » by Syko_boB » Sat Jul 20, 2024 6:54 pm

Lakers

Russell, Hachimura, Vincent, 26 (unpro) & 28 (top 5 pro) 1st swaps
For
LaVine, Kessler

Make a move to give LBJ and Jr a better chance at making history
Free up a roster spot for a Dinwiddie or Lonnie Walker from the FA market

REAVES - LAVINE - VANDERBILT - JAMES SR - DAVIS
CHRISTIE - KNECHT - WOOD - KESSLER

Bulls

LaVine, Vucevic, 25 POR 1st
For
Russell, Hachimura

Cut costs and kick off a major rebuild the people have been wanting

WHITE - GIDDEY - HACHIMURA - WILLIAMS - SMITH
RUSSELL - DOSONMU - BUZELIS - SANOGO

Jazz

Kessler
For
Vucevic, Vincent, 25 POR 1st, 26 (unpro) & 28 (top 5 pro) LAL 1st swaps

Possibly get better now if they are looking to be more competitive, and in the future with some good swap options
If they're unable to absorb Gabe, send him and one of these picks elsewhere
I do believe it's legal though as per fanspo trade machine, CHI & UTA would be pretty even in salaries

GEORGE - SEXTON - MARKKANEN - COLLINS - VUCEVIC
VINCENT - CLARKSON - HENDRICKS - EUBANKS

What’s the protections on the Portland pick? This seems like insane value on kessler.

It dresses up as a lot of value but it’s not really much…

The Portland first is lotto protected through 2028.

The 2026 swap comes the year Utah will likely tanking. Utah already owns “best of Utah/Minn/Cleve” so LAL would have to be really bad, but also not top 5 bad since it’s protected… Seems unlikely to convey?

The 2028 swap is similar but more upside..

I think its pretty bad for Utah.

it's lotto prot every year till 2028 and becomes a 2nd... It probably conveys eventually, 7 years is a long time to be in a playoff drought.

Agree this is probably too much for Kessler, but Chicago also shouldn't trade a pick to dump LaVine/Vuc and still get a negative contract in return. If the Lakers want to send Utah two high risk swaps for Kessler, you don't need all the Chicago stuff, the Lakers can match salary just fine with any one of Wood/Reddish/JHS

UPDATE: Never mind, I had the years swapped, Utah owns MIN and CLE 1sts outright in odd years rather than even years. This really only works if Utah has the ability to swap the lowest of their picks for a Laker pick, otherwise the swap is completely pointless in 2026, where it's just Utah's own pick, when they'll likely still be rebuilding/outright tanking. 2028 has some upside.

The 2028 swap might mean something. the 2026 won't unless we're about to watch LeBron's last season this year.

This prevents Utah from renegotiating and extending Lauri, so it is DOA even though the value is really good. Although if we can trade Lauri for a really good haul, before extending him, then also do this - I'd be all in.

Also the Lakers owe their 2025 1st to New Orleans and their protected 2027 1st to Utah so they can't trade their 2026 1st.

Assuming I'm reading it correctly, it's a pair of pick swaps.

Ah, yes you are. Well, we are so unlikely to exercise those that it just completely kills the value. It is Kessler for 2nds and a bunch of terrible money.

Do Jazz fans think Kessler actually fetches a FRP (or multiple) with legitimate upside? Also, how much cap space do they need to retain in order to R&E Lauri?

They need to retain around 24 million for the R&E, and yes, I think he is worth a first round pick with some upside (say, sliding protections that start at 1-10 protected). Swaps that we will never exercise and some seconds is very little value, then taking back a ton of money makes it even worse.

Feels like the framework might be there. The problem I'm struggling with is if Utah doesn't want to affect their cap space much, but Chicago doesn't want salary someone has to eat some salary. Maybe Detroit? Something like:

Chicago Bulls Receive:
PG D'Angelo Russell
PF Rui Hachimura

Detroit Pistons Receive:
PG Gabe Vincent
Pick(s)

LA Lakers Receive:
SG Zach LaVine
C Walker Kessler

Utah Jazz Receive:
Pick(s)

EDIT: I believe Washington and Memphis both have TPEs that could absorb Vincent's contract.

Bulls just send out Craig to Jazz and it all fits. Pistons aren't needed.

Jazz get Carig, POR25FRP(15-30), unprotect LAL27FRP

Lakers get LaVine, Kessler

Bulls get Rui, DLo, Vincent

It was a no the instant you tried to send Russell to Chicago, it's an instant no.

Why?

Did DLo do something to Chicago?

Chicago has an abundance of guards we don't need or want Russell.

This isn't about Chicago wanting Russell, it's about them wanting to get rid of LaVine and his 3 more years.

There's no rush to get rid of LaVine, it's far better for Chicago to rehab his value and actually remind people he's an elite scoring guard.

Just like always the Bulls are an afterthought for salaries

They have no real need for Russell to come off the bench for his one season

Hachimura starts at the 4 but now Smith is the only center on the roster, and he's never been a starter

no good

The Jazz turned down three good seconds for Kessler from the Knicks this offseason.

They're probably going to juice his trade value to start the season to try to see if the Knicks, Pelicans, or Suns get desperate enough to bite considering how good his contract is.

I also don't understand Laker fans trying to add a center to this team. Davis cannot play PF at all anymore.
