Should Orlando Magic Take A Chance On Ben Simmons ?

Post#1 » by T-Cat » Sun Jul 21, 2024 3:16 pm

Orlando likes to acquire undervalued talent and trying to mold it into something bigger.

While Fultz didn't work out (basketball wise) in Orlando, I feel like he grew as a better overall person with his tenure here!

With Ben Simmons in the final year of his contract I think acquiring him could be beneficial to him and the organization. He can play pick and roll with Banchero and help elevate his game, as well as be aggressive in the open floor.

An offer of Cole Anthony, Caleb Houstan and Wendell Carter Jr. along with 2nd round picks for Ben Simmons and future 1st from BKN.

C- Isaac/M.Wagner/Goga
PF- Bancheo/TDS
SF- F. Wagner/J. Howard/Culver
SG- KCP/Suggs/Harris
PG- Simmons/Black/Joseph

So the question is can we grow Ben into overall better person? Thats funny.
Taking into account Simmons has character issues and we have a bunch of young players i would say no.
Fultz denied to shoot and he said he loves it here, why would Ben change?
Very bad idea unless our sports psychologist is bored.
My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

Have we already reached this part of the offseason?

Let’s do a dual tower lineup with Dwight and Vuc. It actually wouldn’t be too hard to make happen.

The Magic needs a really good player to take the MLE next season. Like Brook Lopez did with the Bucks a few years ago that turned them into a contender.

I wouldn't. The Magic have an extremely positive vibe going right now and Ben Simmons has weird baggage, another former no.1 pick chewed up and spat out by the Philly fan base.

His talent doesn't justify the risk. He averaged what 6 ppg last year?

Simmons is one of the most perplexing players of the last ten years, footage everywhere of him draining shots from deep in the offseason and then he wouldn't do it in a real game. If he could get over his weird mental issues imo he would have been a top 10 player for a decade.

Even Paolo is not quite as talented as Ben was before the thing that happened in the playoffs against Atlanta.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

I believe Orlando's greatest need is more 3-point shooting. Indeed Orlando was the worst in the league in made three pointers.

I say this as: Ben Simmons has made 5 three-pointers over his entire career. Orlando had 14 Magicians that made more 3pointers last season (even Fultz had 4 made 3-balls), and still the tram only had 903 makes. The lowly Pistons at 29th had 906 makes, for perspective.

Yes, I would happily relinquish his Australian Citizenship if America is willing to take a chance on him...

If the Magic hadn't signed KCP and extended Franz, I'd have been at least somewhat interested in getting Simmons as a massive expiring contract to maximize cap space in the summer of 2025.

But alas...

At 40m? No.

As a PG? No

As a center? Could he be better than the 3 guys on the magic roster at that spot and not cost a lot to get? Would the Nets give him away?

It's not the craziest thought.

Doesn't mean it'll happen.

Perhaps he's spent most of his career playing out of position.

The sample data from a glance would suggest his metrics measure up to a really good passing big man. He doesn't shoot the 3 ball. Lots of bigs still don't.

Personally I don't have an issue with any sort of resentment he had towards Philly. Rivers and Embiid were an excellent example of the worst way to treat a member of your team. That's a terrible way to treat a teammate. Terrible culture. We've seen the same sorta thing in Philly now on so many occasions. They chase Fultz out of town. They chased jimmy Butler outta there. Simmons. James Harden. Good luck to Paul George. He's probably next.

Back to Ben Simmons. Id honestly prefer a conversation about him joining the magic than Anfernee Simons.

In the end probably not a move worth making. Unless he can play center better than WCJ, Moe and Goga

If Ben Simmons would have figured it out, we wouldn't even have the opportunity to get him! Even without the 3 point shot he's an All Star.

Say we acquire him next month and have our personnel around him and pumping him up! He would respond with more encouragement to play better.

I go back to the Markelle situation, if we didn't take a chance on him years ago he would have been probably out the league years ago.

Orlando is an interesting place to be for players trying to get their mojo back. 8-)

Ben Simmons also has something to play for as well, his next contract!

Why do you always want us to trade/sign for washed up former stars. In the Vuc era it was washed up Melo & Wade. Or Dwight the last 2 years.

Even pre mental breakdown Simmons would be a bad fit because he was only a PG in Transition. In the half court he couldn't break down defenders & hurt the spacing, even playing pf offball.
Suggs is a great fastbreak PG too but we need a upgrade for our half court offense.

Simmons is easly one of worst waste of talent i've seen in past 10 years.
6'10, 240 , 40 inch vertical, good feel for a game, but esencially usless due his jumpshot & mental breakdowns.
